Here are the average commute times in the nation for residents that live in cities with over 250,000 residents and includes any type of way one gets to work including walking, driving, public transit, a combo, etc... The US Census simply asks how long it takes to get from your home to work.
New York City: 38.4 minutes
Chicago: 32.7 minutes
Philadelphia: 30.3
Riverside, CA: 29.8
Baltimore: 29.7
Washington DC: 29.4
San Francisco: 29.2
Oakland: 29.1
Los Angeles: 28.5
Boston: 28.2
New York's long commute comes from the outer burroughs, most likely trying to get to Manhattan using a combinations of buses and subways that requires connections and can be rather slow. For the boroughs, the AVERAGE commute time was:
Bronx: 41.8 minutes
Queens: 41.4 minutes
Staten Island: 41.2 minutes
Brooklyn: 39.9 minutes

THANKYOU for the more detailed information...I know Forbes has different criteria too and hence different rankings...
I don't understand why they went for Loop 610 instead of Highway 290 (Northwest Freeway) in Houston. It's not a freeway that leads in or out of town, and really only the West Loop is bad.
Anyway, commuting is for people who choose to live far from work. Sure, they might've made some tradeoffs otherwise, but that's part of life. Spending all day in a car is a tradeoff too.
Columbus OH has surprisingly heavy traffic on 270. Took me completely by surprise.
LA sucks, plain and simple. So does DC and Atlanta. To me they are all about equal. The Belt Pkwy in Brooklyn/LI is pretty bad, but not as bad as my pick for the worst highway in America. Houston was pretty sucky, but it doesn't stand out to me like the others, maybe because I expected it or wasn't on 'main offenders'.
Worst "singular road" to me? The Cross Bronx. Ugly, dilapidated, cramped, and packed to a dead stop at 3am.
I don't find I5 in Seattle that bad compared to the other places I listed.
From all our replies I think our nation needs to ALSO start subsidizing high speed rail to spread the "grief" around....LOL.
It is similar; however MY SOURCE is NOT the SAME as the one you are pointing out....therefore I feel it is a different thread...but feel free to report it to the moderators... . PS...I DID a FORUM SEARCH before posting the thread!!! http://www.comcast.net/slideshow/news-commutes/ http://www.city-data.com/forum/city-...s-america.html looks different enough to me; but I'll report myself to make your day; and leave it up to our moderators..

I thought Pittsburgh was not too bad since it's initial infrastructure was built when the city proper was more than double it's present population; but I've only visited the city a few times....
There are definitely worse traffic jams than those in Pittsburgh, but it can get pretty brutal at times during rush hour.

I believe you guys...the golden triangle's position surrounded by rivers and hills must cause plenty of traffic "bottlenecks". Like I said I have only visited there but I loved it!!!
