Also there are now lounges and clubs on Brickell ave and even some in the middle of Downtown these are new and with the growing population of residential downtown Miami it will continue to grow. Also Downtown Miami is home to one of the most famous clubs in the world Club Space - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Now South Beach is on a whole other level and I would imagine the OP did not mean Miami Beach when he said Miami. Because South Beach is IMO one of the top 10 maybe even 5 night life spots in the world and it is very urban.

Dont Forget club Bongo right by the airlines arena. I think there is alot of nightlife for all Genres of people in Miami. Thats what i like about my hometown you have many different choices..

I do find the nightlife in Miami a bit, shall we say, overrated, BUT I've been to South Beach and other parts of South Florida too many times and DT Houston enough to know that the two don't compare, and I'm not going to let such a lie go so easily. Again, I'm not denying Houston's nightlife, but they're not comparable.
Is this my new nickname now because I always feel offended anytime you use this word???

But there are other parts of South Florida, such as Ft. Lauderdale, Hollywood (the area around the Hard Rock Casino) and parts of West Palm (Clematis St/CityPlace) that have pretty active nightlife as well.

While celebs and fashionistas still flock to South Beach, this isn't the 1990's anymore either. The club scene is a lot more accessible than it used to be in many instances.
I actually find DT Ft. Lauderdale and Hollywood to be a bit boring. Never been to West Palm downtown. Houston is making strides in it's downtown area but it has a ways to go.

The best party district in Atlanta is about 15 blocks north of downtown IMO. (Crescent St. in Midtown.) But yes, Castleberry Hill in downtown ATL has a vibrant nightlife *every* night of the week. Back in 2002, most of the action was in Buckhead. But now it's Midtown, Castleberry Hill and Virginia-Highland.

On the broader point, Miami trumps all "sunbelt" cities on the nightlife question, with NOLA being the only real rival. 1.Miami; 2. NOLA; 3. LA 4. ATL 5.Austin 6. SF 7. Houston, maybe.

South Beach is an amazing experience. I am always so entertained by just people watching when I go there. I dont think anywhere in the southern half of the country can compare except for LA. Atlanta and Dallas have nightlife scenes that please their crowds and Ive heard Scottsdale, AZ has a fun straight bar scene. And New Orleans is definitely a party place in the french quarter from what I've been told by friends that have gone there and had a blast. I'm sure someone could go to Houston and have a good time but I just don't think its one of the top cities in the south for nightlife.

Austin doesn't offer the same variety of nightlife as Houston. Downtown Austin's nightlife is vibrant, but the variety of clubs don't compare to what you can find in Houston. It's mostly geared toward the college scene.

Houston's downtown nightlife has actually went down compared to what it use to be; this applies to all Texas cities. You could go to Houston, Dallas or even smaller Texas towns like Waco and find scenes or crowds comparable to 6th Street Austin back in the 90s to early 2000s.

Everyone I've met who's been to Austin and San Francisco have said that SF's night life is far superior to Austin's.

I never did check out Castleberry Hill when I lived in Atlanta but I have heard it has a cool vibe. The downtown business district stays buzzing with a lot of hotel/convention business, I wouldnt say its a hot club scene there though. The intersection at International and Peachtree always has people walking around. The Buckhead bar scene now is pretty lame compared to what Buckhead Village used to be. The Crescent strip in Midtown is bumpin on the weekends (dont try to drive down that street, you wont get far). Virginia Highland has a nice neighborhood bar hop feel to it, It was prob my fav. Wasnt too crowded but had a healthy amount of people. The gay nightlife in Atlanta seems to be in a bit of a lull right now since Wetbar closed, I really hope someone opens a nice upscale dance club in Atlanta and I really missed Red Chair when they closed it down. Those were my two favorite places to go in that city. Now they are gone with the wind!

Although I agree that Houston's night life is probably more diverse, I don't know if I would agree that Austin's nightlife is still only geared towards college students. Every time I go to downtown Austin, I see a lot of people in they're late 20's or early 30's bar hopping or going to clubs on 6th street or else where in downtown. It seems like Austin is gradually becoming a very yuppie town which is kind of annoying. Although, it's not very common to see anyone over 35 on 6th street. Houston is a very big and diverse city and I would expect its nightlife to reflect that, BUT downtown Austin is MUCH livelier than downtown Houston. I can testify to that from experience.
