Columbus has very few clubs downtown... they tried to fix that with Long St Live but it didn't pan out so well. Most of the dance clubs in Columbus are in the peripheral areas around downtown like the Arena District, Brewery District, Campus... etc...
Cincinnati seems to have a decent clubs scence on Main St but it can be inconsistent due to safety concerns. It seems like whenever they start getting some momentum there a few people that get mugged and it all starts falling apart.
Cleveland's nightlife downtown used to be centered around the Flats, but has since shifted to the Warehouse District and 4th St. As far as downtown club scenes go in Ohio only, since that's where my experience is, I'd have to give Cleveland the edge.
Cleveland has a thriving nightlife scene in it's city centre ... there are a multitude of venues in the warehouse district, gateway district, e.4th st, along upper euclid ave and a cluster around the CSU campus. Cleveland has thee best nightlife scene in Ohio, followed closely by the areas of downtown Columbus.
If you're talking about a downtown club scene, I doubt Chicago is even the best in the Midwest. There's just not a lot of that in the Central Loop or River North. Restaurants, theater, shopping...yes.
I thought Rush Street in downtown Chicago was supposed to be some big club area?
A friend of mine lived in Minneapolis/St. Paul for a year, and he said a "dance club" there is more like a bar with a small dance floor as opposed to an actual club.
It depends on what your into.
Hip-Hop/R&B = Detroit and St. Louis
Jazz and Blues = St. Louis, Detroit, Kansas City, and Cleveland.
Country Western = Omaha and Kansas City.
Rock = Cleveland, Detroit, and Minneapolis.
Personally I think Detroit and St. Louis have the best clubs outside Chicago, but the Detroit club seen is a tad more dangerous than most.
So I voted St. Louis.
Hip Hop you put Detroit and STL over Minnieapolis? Minnieapolis has the best underground hip hop scene in the midwest(yes I think better then Chicago even)... no clue how it is in their downtown area tho...
Country you put KC? I live in KC... I don't know of any country western club scene.... KC has the biggest 1 day rock festival in the US in it's downtown area....(tho this is not club scene)
KC also actually has a huge and lively downtown club scene, where as nothing really goes on downtown in STL... its dead.
3AM is last call in KC.
