you have those states without a dominant/international city (ohio, virginia, new jersey, nebraska, etc.)
or you have those states that are just as infamous as their largest cities, or are known for a wide variety of different cultures (texas, california, new york, florida)
for instance, it's not uncommon for someone from los angeles to introduce themselves as being from california, or someone from dallas to say they're from texas. but i've never heard someone from chicago say "i'm from illinois", or someone from atlanta say they're from georgia
LOL if your from Los Angeles you just say your from LA
anybody in the world will know what your talking about.
I'd say people from Texas, Alaska, Hawaii, California and New York would readily say they're from that state since those are the states that more people internationally would know about. Whether they would RATHER identify with their state INSTEAD OF the USA, I'd say Texas. Half of texans would rather secede from the union anyway.

Probably Florida, Texas, California, Hawaii, and Alaska. Hawaiians and Alaskans typically tend to naturally identify with their state. Florida, Texas, and California are probably the only internationally recognized states that are more well known than the cities in them.

I wouldn't go that far with California. Los Angeles and San Francisco are pretty well known entities in their own right. I was pretty surprised myself whenever I travel overseas or out of the country how many people know about the two areas.
First and foremost though, my overarching identity is an American, since the way I talk and walk pretty much give me away. However, once I say I'm from California, I get asked really retarded questions like 'do you know any movie stars?' or 'do you surf?' Mostly in jest though.
If anyone is wondering, no I don't personally know movie stars and I don't even know how to swim so surfing is out of the question.
