San Francisco did not strike me as gritty at all, besides the fact that the homeless population was ridiculously large. In fact I would say it is the opposite of gritty. Coming from Philadelphia, the bright colors on most houses/buildings in San Francisco was almost nauseating.

Biggest Gritty Cities that I've been to:
NYC
Chicago
Philly
Baltimore
Cleveland
Boston

SF has its gritty parts for sure, but I wouldn't really call it a gritty city overall. I think LA is more city gritty overall than SF.

Louisville has a sizeable amount of that nice grit.
