Just because you been to Hagerstown does not say that you have truly traveled throughout the Entire State of Maryland........

Next time go to Southern Maryland and Maryland Eastern Shore.......

So basically you have never traveled throughout the state of Maryland....

Whether you like it or not Maryland is a Southern State despite DC and Baltimore its been a Southern State and it will continue to be a Southern State........

Maryland is absolutely Southern in nature.
Thats a good thing, too.

I've covered most of the state, from Cumberland to the Eastern Shore. I found the Eastern Shore to be a cross between where I live in Indiana and perhaps a touch of the Mississippi Delta. West of Frederick is a cross between West Virginia and Pennsyltucky. I guess it depends on how you define southern. I'm not sure many Marylanders would identify themselves as such.

THIS is an interesting way to do it, Polo! That is, rank by parts of states as well as whole states (when applicable)! I am going to give it a shot that way! LOL

Backtracking, as mentioned, this thread goes back to 2007. On posts 16 and 60 (back in 2007!) I did a ranking using two different criteria, respectively. I have learned quite a bit since then from folks from certain states as to their Southern history and culture (as well as continuing independent research as Southern history/culture is an avocation of mine! Yikes!). So, I am going to "update" my list under the #60 criteria, and using Polo's very relevant "division" of some states.

Anyway, here are mine (again, updated) on a 1-10 scale. Naturally the scale is subjective. But on this one (by gawd and realizing nobody gives a damn! LOL), it would be something like this (and I know it needs tweaking!):

10: Unquestionably Southern with no dilutions of any real consequence.
9 : Overwhelmingly Southern, but with a few noteable and gradiated dilutions.
7 - 8: Decidedly Southern, but with enough other influences as to be of consideration
5 - 6: Generally equally Southern and of other regional influence
3- 4: Some Southern influence, but of relatively minor impact.
1 - 2: Very little, if anything, Southern about it.
Edited in red
So without further ado, here is my worthless two cents worth!

As always, I enjoy reading and looking over another "ranking"...but just want to note for the record that on THIS one, these are your subjective re-edits of my earlier scale...not my own digital re-arrangment! LOL

*after thought* Although yes, I think I will do a bit of "tweaking" on my earlier one based on some things Polo and Spade added. Gimme a minute...

Default Updated "tweaked" list!

Here is the "tweaked" list and rankings spinning off of my post #386! Not that anyone cares, but I have a frequent and silly compulsion to do such things, occasionally...and especially after reading Polo and Spades thoughts on additions as related to this list. Made sense to me, by golly!

9-10: Unquestionably Southern with no dilutions of any real consequence.
7.0-8.9: Overwhelmingly Southern, but with a few noteable and gradiated dilutions.
6.0 - 6.9: Decidedly Southern, but with enough other influences as to be of consideration
5.0 - 5.9: - Generally Southern, but very much flavored with other regional influences
4 - 4.9: Southern and others about half and half.
2.0- 3.9: Some Southern influence, but of relatively minor impact.
0 - 1.9: Very little, if anything, Southern about it.

So here we go again...and makes no more difference than it did last night!
