Washington DC (for jobs) or Honolulu (for everything else).
We're all stuck in work for most of the weekdays, so jobs and job satisfaction has a lot of meaning and impact. It certainly adds to our happiness or lack of happiness.
However, for outside-of-work...those occassional evenings and weekends. You could work hard and struggle for rent, and have free beaches and beauty all around you. Yet struggling to survive.
Is it better to go with the city with a ton of interesting jobs and financial security. Or a city that offers a high quality of life but satisfying work life isn't part of the equation?
On the other hand, if your weekends and a couple weekday evenings are super pleasant with worldclass beaches and all that Hawaii has to offer....who cares about the drudgery of where you work to live among it?

ok lets wait 4 days and see how many jobs are left in DC, ok
Hawaii is just too isloated. DC you can escape to a a lot more places, both citywise and outdoorwise within a weekend/day's drive. I had friends that lived in Hawaii and while they absolutely loved it, they said you get island fever and because of the isolation it costs a lot of money if you want to go anywhere outside the Hawaiian islands.
At least in Carribbean you are not isloated and are within a 2-3 hour flight to a lot of places and different countries.
I know a few people who've moved to Honolulu. It's very expensive, so they've all ended up needed to work at least 2 jobs. That doesn't leave much time for going to the beach. FWIW, some of them love living there--but I don't think it would appeal to me.
I'd rather live in DC even if the jobs situation in Honolulu was similar. Not everyone likes constant warm weather, isolation, and high cost of living.
