Philadelphia has a more positive image in the country than Chicago does. A lot of people (who haven't been to Chicago) portray it to be associated with words like "gang", "violence", "guns", "murders". I don't know what you mean by "hate" but people are definitely critical of Chicago, and they should be for the problems that it has. But at the same time, it's also over the top and exaggerated.
And people who don't know a whole lot about Philadelphia associate the words "ghetto," "trash" and "dump" with it. And it's too often known as a "city of losers" in the sports world to boot.

Philadelphia still has a reputation of being one of the first cities in the country... being historic in that sense. It's often overshadowed by New York City. Yes, it has a reputation also of ghetto which is inaccurate from what I can tell, but I still don't think it's nearly as bad as the things people come up with for Chicago. Chicago really suffers from the location it is in also. The midwest is not exactly a desirable destination for people from other parts of the country. Sports is meh, cities have labels for that all the time. I personally wouldn't call it a city of losers, though the notorious thing about Philly and sports is their rabid fans.

There is no way Chicago is the most underrated city in America.

Where did I say that? Not really sure how you came up with that conclusion from that post. My post was mainly a response to what Gnutella said. I said it's underrated and why it is that it really goes unnoticed for being the 3rd largest city, definitely don't think it's the most underrated. There's a lot of cities out there that are really underrated.
How do you figure? DC makes a good case on its own merits, but I don't really see your logic here. Neither Dallas or Houston has the history, educational institutions, cultural institutions, etc. of Philly.
No city in the northeast is underrated. Point blank period.
Providence, Baltimore and to a lesser extent Philadelphia are all underrated IMO although probably not for much longer.
