F500 is ranked by revenues; many low margin industries like retail have lots of revenues but scant profits and puny stock market values

Most consider profitability or stock market value of cos. far more relevant than revenues, as many high profit margin industries like tech or finance or energy include many of world's most valuable cos.....like Exxon, Microsoft, Apple, Google, Cisco, GoldmanSachs, etc

Consider no. of >$100Bn stock mkt value cos.: SiliconValley has ~8; NYC/CT/NJ has ~6...but NYC region has about 3x population of SV region, so on per capita basis SV dwarfs NYC (or any other region in world) on most metrics of major corporate HQs or wealth of top co. founders/execs

And when one examines world geography in terms of stock mkt value of cos. HQd in urban regions (most major cos. are in suburbs not in cities) realize how SV, NYC, Dall, Hou simply dwarf highly populated, but economically underachieving, regions like LA or Chic or Bos or Phila (or any town in Europe or Asia)....can't let population or revenues fool one about economic relevance of an urban region or a specific co.

Pure location of Headquarters is over-rated as many companies may not even have their Headquarters in the US or the bulk of their operations in the city where their headquarters are. Case in point is the Pharma Industry with many outside of the US; their US presence far exceeds their ex-US and drives their business. I can think of 7 that would qualify in NY to Philly corrider that would have approximately 180-200 billion in combined revenue and employ close to 75K non manufacturing professionals in this region.

I would have never thought that Minneapolis-St. Paul could have more than Atlanta.

You missed Domtar based in Fort Mill, SC. They’re number 383 on the list, with annual revenues of $5,4billion. They’re the US headquarters of a Canadian operation.

Domtar

Does SC even count as part of the Charlotte area?

The US headquarters of a Canadian operation does not count as the headquarter city. Is it even a US company?

Smirfit Stone counts St. Louis as a dual headquarters city with Chicago. So St. Louis could have +1.

Yes, the Souther border of Charlotte's main County (Mecklenburg) is the South Carolina State line, so some of the suburbs spill over.

You need to take that up with Fortune magazine because they've been on the list for a few years now.

And as johnatl wrote, Ft. Mill is very much a part of Charlotte.
