Maybe by population, but not by office space. Its day-time DT working population is behind cities like Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Boston (See Table 1).
Stop. Seriously Philly people: STOP. How about this, without Boston there would be no Philadelphia.
Philly is an amazing city. Highlight why you're important right now...saying "City X wouldn't be what it was today if it weren't for us!" makes you sound pathetic. Boston is one of the few cities in the country that can rival/equal Philadelphia's history...yet we don't resort to that argument. Your history may help your city be great in many ways like museums and beautiful neighborhoods, but you can't take credit for another city's success just because of your role in American history.
*waits for post about how New York & Washington made a secret plot to take away the nation's capital from Philadelphia*
Philly has the third largest downtown, fourth largest media market, fourth largest urban area, is the largest college town in America (because essentially thats what philly is, a massive college town.) The single largest shopping/employment center in America(KOP). The Birthplace of the United States, has the oldest residential street in America. Home to the largest telecom company in the U.S.(comcast), has the largest fresh water port in the U.S., was the Birthplace of the Marine Corps, invented the stromboli, is where electricity was first "harnessed", and the list goes on. So I think its safe tho say Philly is a solid number 4.
And with or without Boston Philly would still exist, Philly was the second largest city in the British empire, while boston was just another coastal New England Town.

No Philly has the third largest residential downtown. I was talking about office space. DC only trails New York and Chicago when it comes to that.

Ok is one more important than the other? they are significant in their downtowns on both accounts
But honestly DC does not belong in this poll - this should be for #5 as there there is a good competition there - DC in the current day based on political significance alone is in the top 4; arguably higher.
What makes residential meaningless, and commercial the end all when determining who's number 4?
I never said it did or didn't. But having the 3rd largest commercial space in the nation as your main central business district accounts for some credit, don't you think. As a result, I threw that out there to counter Rainrocks' beliefs that DC is somehow nothing more than a "museum" generated because of Philadelphia.

Your right, the fact the DC is the seat of power to the most powerful empire the world has ever known, is reason enough to put it at least at number four, probably higher.
It should go like this.
NYC
D.C.
Chicago
LA
Philly
Boston
SF
Miami
Houston
In human population, yes. But not when it comes to office space.

Alright, you're doing good now...

Are you sure about that? If it's not larger, Boston is at the very least close...but overall it is superior to Philadelphia by quite a margin when it comes to colleges.

The Birthplace of the United States,
You're starting to revert back to the past again...

That's not important at all...and you're continuing to use old things to validate Philadelphia's current importance.

Who knows where this country would be without the stromboli!

Haha, yes we were just another coastal New England town...quiet, calm, submissive to British authority. That's us! It's interesting that for some reason whenever people talk about history, the Philly posters have an uncontrollable urge to trash Boston...I don't know why they do, but it's pretty sad.
Anyway...you mentioned the large population of Philly, an important company, and your large port...good! Let's here more reasons why Philadelphia is important now...
