"Trade" is a vague, archaic term in a globalized, virtualized economy
Most major cos. in tech or finance or energy earn ~50% of profits outside US and have money/ops/workers scattered throughout globe, but most owners and highest-paid execs work from offices in SiliconValley or MidtownManhattan or Houston or Dallas, far from any ports...and not in Europe or Asia

The fact the OP stated Los Angeles vs NYC led me to believe he or she was referring to trade in the physical sense.
New York is considered the financial capital of the world. However, according to surveys by Trader Monthly magazine and the Financial Times, Chicago and London are considered the top trading cities in the world.
I would say these cities are important for several reasons: NY, LA, New Orleans/SOuth Lousiana, Houston, Chicago, Detroit
Our biggest exports are airplanes and automobiles... Hence Detroit and Chi
The busiest ports are... south Lousiana and Houston for energy
NY and LA are huge ports and huge centers of commerce
On the next tier I would put Chicago, Atlanta, and Dallas for being regional distribution centers
would you still say Detroit is doing fine or on decline considering the current situation of the city?
Same with New Orleans.
