Well I thought I might try something a little different here
What in your opinion is a great and interesting 4 square miles (give or take). This premise basically gives all areas the ability to be thier own; small enough that great little towns can be in the same breath with huge cities because it is just the area that is your own little heaven. I am really not looking for a why is this city better than this city but what makes your favorite places and why. Hopefully this will broaden some horizons or offer some new perspectives on place
I will start:
Cape May NJ
A little slice of heaven to me; great architecture, vibrance, restaurants, bars, and the ocean - and if I want to get away there is fairly secluded and undeveloped beach right there sorrounded by a bird sanctuary (not that I am a birder) - heaven in 4 square mile area
Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness area, Mason County, Michigan. Sand dunes, beach, water, woods. No houses, buildings or anything. Peace and quiet no matter the day or season with the sound of waves breaking on a sugar sand beach being broken only by the screech of a seagull once in a while. It is miles either direction up or down the beach before you can find a house. Surrounded by federal and State land it is going to stay undeveloped for a LONG time to come.
Interesting because of the difference in the landscape in the area... From beaches right on Lake Michigan, to tall sand dunes, to wooded area. Foredunes, interdunal pools, wildlife that run from Bald Eagles to deer and a ton of different animals in between.
My personal favorite is downtown Austin from Guadalupe to second street (although I'm not exactly sure how many sq miles that is), but I'm probably in the minority on this. The French Quarter is another place that comes to mind.
I think the Golden Gate area of San Francisco tops the list. You have the most iconic bridge in the country, if not the world, part of the Golden Gate Rec area, the beautiful Presidio of San Francisco, the bay, Fisherman's Wharf, and then parts of some really cool urban neighborhoods like Richmond, Pacific Heights, Haight-Ashbury and the Castro. This area to me is the perfect juxtaposition of man-made and natural beauty.
