I don't know about u but I don't feel any safer after 9 long years. So innocent people lost on both sides to me. Its no different when a soldier has a civilian caught in the crossfire. Its the same thing when u use FREEDOM to justify killing the innocent. They all don't deserve to die but it is part of the freedom. You don't think that these wars are over just FREEDOM do you? Its economic rewards as well. In that regard its just good ole AMERICAN BUSINESS. Casaulities for a cause.

lol Gangland exaggerates things in pretty much all of it's episodes. That's not to say those gangs aren't bad, but for example they claimed that Oakland has 10,000 gang members, when in reality Alameda county has 10,000..and Oakland itself has about 1,000.

As far as "Nuestro Familias and Sortenos"....

You got their names wrong there. It's Nuestra Familia and La Eme, which are rival mexican prison gangs. They have street gang offshoots called the Nortenos and Surenos (Northerners and Southerners). Nortenos wear red, are mostly in Northern California, and are affiliated with Nuestra Familia. They also associate with the number 14, which stands for "N", the 14th letter of the alphabet. Nortenos are comprised of mostly american born latinos, as well as some whites, asians and blacks. Surenos wear blue, and associate with La Eme (AKA the Mexican Mafia). They associate with the number 13, which stands for "M", the 13th letter of the alphabet. They originated in southern california, have many more members who are recent immigrants, and you won't see many non-latino people either (surenos are allied with the aryan nation/white power groups when in prison, so are kind of equally racist against non-white/latino people). MS-13 is allied with the surenos, as far as i know. When you hear about latino gangs having "race wars" with blacks in LA, that's Surenos. Nortenos are equal opportunity gangbangers...and don't really exist in LA/SoCal in the first place.

Norteños

Sureños

Typically Nortenos dont make it past Fresno where as Surenos have a presence in Northern California, both are larger than the Bloods and Crips.

Believe in Cleve... that's some racist BS! The island of PR is trying to erase African history off of the island. That's what the Nazi's did. Taino? Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans, Panamanians do not look anything like Latinos from El Salvador, Mexico, ...etc. Why? Because of the African influence. PRs and DRs perceive themselves as the low people on the Latino totem pole due to their "Blackness", so to fit in these islands appear to be eliminating Africa from their history. PR is an island of mulatto people no different than what existed in the southern US during Jim Crow. PR and DR, like Cuba are part of the Caribbean, and therefore a child of Africa.

Chicago probably tops LA in this category (unfortunately).

I don't know if this was mentioned b4, but both Chicago and LA based gangs are pretty nationwide, but most gangs in the country fall under the banner of either "People" or "Folks". Even many gangs based in LA like the Bloods (Peoples) and Crips (Folks) and many Hispanic gangs like Latin Kings (Peoples) fall under this umbrella (mostly, the sets outside of LA).

People and Folks originated in Chicago where gangs like the Gangster Disciples, Black Disciples and Spanish Disciples are Folks (Blue flag, hat right, six-point star, pitch fork, etc); while gangs like the Black P. Stones, Vice Lords and Latin Kings are Peoples (Red flag (Gold for Latin Kings), hat turned left, five-point star, playboy bunny, etc).

Now LA gangs do have a heavier influence in Latin America than the Chicago Gangs. This has to to with LA's proximity to Latin America. There are 18 Street and MS-13 gangs all through Central America as well as many Bloods in Belize. However, I still think that Chicago gangs (esp. before many of the leaders were indicted) are way more organized and Mafia-like than the LA gangs.

Black gangs in Los Angeles continue to decline since South-Central\ South LA is increasingly becoming Latino. When people hear gangs in LA they mostly think Latino. The gang problem continues to decease each year though it is surprising since the recession means many people are out of work. Poverty is the biggest reason for gangs.

Los Angeles. Is the Gang Capital of America.

Oakland has over 2,000 gang members on record. However, Oakland is more associated with turfs rather than gangs.

wrong dude. it's not. i have been researching gangs extensively for a few years now for a documentary we are working on and Chicago is most definitely America's gang capital. the Chicago street gang legacy is a long and sordid tale. even the Chicago police have an old irish gang symbol on their hats.

highly recommend the book 'Gang Leader for a Day' to see how organized the Chicago gangs really are (and this book actually is an account of things in the 90's... which were more violent but far less technologically advanced). they actually are putting their money guys through business school and enlisting their soldiers into the military. they are not f'n around.
