I haven't actually ever been to Mercer Island, but based on what I've heard it seems comparable to Sausalito.
Both are small, ritzy, and expensive suburbs that are close to big cities, but due to geography they are actually quite insulated from the city. Both are right on the waterfront and are touristy (at least I imagine Mercer Island to be touristy).

Mercer Island, because I have family in California and it gets boring always being in the same state all the time, I have them to visit in both the Bay Area and in LA because of family, so the things there get old fast. So Washington, change in scenery would be ideal.
It was pretty close, but I like the rain and change in temperature so I would choose Mercer Island, WA. Although I would not mind in the least bit to live would choose Sausalito, CA.
I found some photos of Sausalito and especially liked the view from Sausalito to San Francisco. I've never been to Mercer Island or Washington for that matter. But I have seen Sausalito & love the hills and bay.

Those are great photos. I like the photos of the view of San Francisco from Sausalito more than of Sausalito itself [even though it is a lovely town also]. Very expensive as one would expect.
Wow I can't decide which looks more beautiful! Guess I'll be exploring Mercer Island next time I'm in Seattle.
