Not much, honestly. Good barbecue, Cooper-Young district and some parts of east Memphis are nice. But away from those areas, the city is a gigantic dump, IMO. Now, I expected more from Nashville as the so-called Music City USA. I was particularly displeased to learn that the Grand Ole Opry is now out in suburbia. But Nashville is at least cleaner and more pleasing to the eye. It's also a university town, which adds a nice element.

The Opry performs downtown at the Ryman for 1/2 the year and 1/2 the year at the Opry House at Opryland. This is done to accommodate the convention season at the Gaylord Opryland Resort.

If you ever go, catch it at the Ryman...one of the best performance venues in the country.

Exactly! That was the same conclusion that I came to.

I just don?t get it.
Same exact feeling. It was TOO watered down and the entertainment district was relatively short. Beale is like the Disney version of Bourbon, but people love it so hey.

Memphis feels bigger to me because it is developed in patterns similarly to MS, LA, and TX where everything and everything is generally closer and gridded, and it doesn't help that it is generally flat. Nashville, on the other hand, takes after the Piedmont cites in AL, GA, etc. in terms of development.

Personally I prefer Memphis, but Nashville has the cultural uniqueness thing going. Drop me in a random part of Memphis and outside of the accents you wouldn't be able to distinguish it from say Jackson, MS.

True, I guess that's why I don't like Jackson either. I must admit, I always tend to sway toward more modern places than Memphis, but it does have flavor. Most Mississippi river metros do. I just think Nashville is a lot more upscale visibly, and that's never a bad thing.

I've been to both Nashville and Memphis, so here's my take on "which feels bigger":
Memphis has a far higher population density than Nashville. It feels more crowded and has a more compact street grid. But its density alone does not make for a bigger-feeling city, just a more crowded city.
Nashville's metro area has more people than Memphis's. More people live in the Nashville area, but they are more spread out. Nashville's largest hotel is far bigger than Memphis's. And Nashville's skyline is much more impressive than Memphis's; in fact, Nashville has 12 buildings that are 300 feet taller or more in height, while Memphis has 8 (counting the Pryamid). So all totaled, I say Nashville feels like the bigger city.

Sorry to butt in but the great smoky moutain national park is the most visited tourist destination in Tennessee.

I can't say much simply because despite growing up and living in Nashville for 20 years, I never once visited Memphis (sad I know). I've been to Knoxville a few times and Chattanooga more times than I can count but never Memphis. I've heard Memphis is nice though despite the crime rate which might be blown out of proportion.

We have to remember that metro Memphis has 8 counties and of those 8 only 3 are in TN . People who live in Memphis never really travel to the Mississippi or Arkansas part of metro area. And since Desoto County has built up so much, they have their own little world. When people visit area of Memphis it looks bad because we have lost so many people to across the border. But out of towners and prospective people can't see that.

True but I think Nashville is more interesting when it comes down to it.
