Santa Fe is also the state capital which might have a lot to do with it as well....

ohhhhhh, don't let the Houstonites hear you say that. That'll get there tail feathers ruffled no doubt. Then they're gonna come in here screamin how Houston is definitely more well known cause it's so much more of an international city and has so much more of a worldly presence.

I'm a Houstonian, and if you read my post earlier in the thread, I was just fine with it.

We're Texans first, Houstonians second. Dallas belongs in the spotlight too.

To me Charleston, South Carolina and Santa Fe, New Mexico are probably the best example so far.

The following are kind of guesses.

From Virginia Richmond might be better known than Virginia Beach.

From North Carolina Raleigh might be better known than Charlotte.

Kind of, but the Bobcats and Panthers really help Charlotte out a bit. Even though RTP and it's schools get so much fame.

Florida for sure. But, let's face it, Jacksonville's city population is all smoke and mirrors because of its never ending city limits. Miami is but 35 square miles of land while Jacksonville is approaching 800. Yet, Miami is more than half the population of Jax with less than 1/20th the physical size.

^ I agree, Miami is definitely the most famous city in Florida but not the most populated. To tell you the truth, I never like going by city proper population but by metropolitan population. There is more to a city than just the actual core you also have the suburbs and everything that surrounds it. South Florida Metropolitan is bigger than Jacksonville Metropolitan.

Just going by city population, not metro population.

Miami, Orlando, and Tampa > Jacksonville
St. Louis > Kansas City
Santa Fe > Albuquerque
Cleveland and Cincinnati > Columbus
Kansas City, KS > Wichita
Charleston > Columbia
Nashville > Memphis
Green Bay > Milwaukee
Hartford > Bridgeport
Raleigh > Charlotte

Due to the abitrary city limits in US, this can have some cities, such as Jacksonville (Miami), Columbus (Cleveland), Memphis (Nashville), Kansas City(St. Louis). However, if you ask states in which the most famous metro area is less populated than the most populated, I doubt there is any.
