This was such an interesting thread I just had to register. I usually tend to be a lurker and do not post much anywhere.
I have lived in 4 quite different places: Chicago , Orange County (Southern CA), Sonoma County (Northern CA), and now Denver . (And yes, Southern CA is as different from Northern CA as Miami is different from Seattle.) (Perhaps a slight exaggeration, but I'm considering the people as much as the place.)
Because back in the day, I worked as a "Corporate" Travel Agent, for twenty years I used to spend at LEAST 2 long weekends (3-4 days each) per month in a major city of my choice. My excuse was to check out accommodations for clients, but mostly I traveled because I liked it. I was a geography major in college. I have been in every state West and South of the Appalachian Mountains, and that includes most major metro areas within. Also, I have driven over twenty times from Chicago - SF, and twenty times from Chicago - LA, taking various and convoluted routes between. (i.e. going to New Orleans on route, and going to Vancouver BC on route.)
Just for fun, here's a list:
San Diego, Anaheim/ Santa Ana, San Bernadino/ Riverside, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Francisco/ Oakland, Sacramento, Fresno, Portland, Eugene, Seattle/ Tacoma, Spokane, Tuscon, Phoenix, Flagstaff, Las Vegas, Reno, Boise & Pocatello & Idaho Falls, Salt Lake City, Missoula & Great Falls & Billings, Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Denver, Cheyenne, Casper, El Paso, Midland/ Odessa, Lubbock, Abilene, Amarillo, Laredo, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas/ Fort Worth, Houston, Beaumont, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Wichita, Omaha, Lincoln, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Little Rock, Kansas City, St. Louis, Des Moines, Iowa City, Minneapolis/ St. Paul, Rochester, Fargo, Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago, Springfield, Champaign/ Urbana, Memphis, Nashville, Jackson, Birmingham, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa/ St. Pete, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, The Keys, Lexington, Indianapolis, Evanston, Terre Haute, South Bend, Gary/ Hammond, Fort Wayne, Lafayette, Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnatti, Parkersburg, Pittsburgh, Youngstown, Erie, Buffalo, Niagra Falls, Rochester, Honolulu, Hawaii (Big Island), Maui, Kauai.
Wow. Notice how the list thins out eastward. Also the conspicuous absence of any East Coast cities (except FL). I probably included too many cities in IN, but I'm from the part of Chicagoland in nwi. Hyphenated places such as SF/ Oak and SEA/ TAC are certainly not one place. I've spent many, many days in each. Other hyphenated places like DFW and MSP I've only driven through the "other" half, i.e. St. Paul and Fort Worth. Sometimes I included smaller places, such as Flagstaff and Las Cruces, but they are the only cities in that part of their state. I've spent at least three days in every city listed.
None of our clients ever booked international flights with us, so I never had the opportunity to fly internationally for free. Nevertheless I've been to Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto, Mexico City, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Saltillo, San Luis Potosi, Taxco, Nuevo Laredo, Juarez, Nogales, and Tijuana. Plus one month in Melbourne Australia, and one month in Mumbai, India. During the course of my Melbourne/ Mumbai trip I circumnavigated the globe (travelling westward), and was in both Southern and Northern hemispheres.
This was a fun trip down memory lane for me. I don't travel much anymore. I'm not bragging. My travels do not compare to a truck driver who lives on the road, or certain business people who are constantly flying somewhere.
I hope to post about other things in the near future. I really dig this site!

I haven't travelled nearly as much as I would like to (yet at least), but here's my list anyway. I tried to include cities around 300,000 or more in population and obviously did NOT include places I've just driven through or spent only part of one day in.
