Let`s keep 1,000,000 population at the minimum. I think Montreal is up there.
$600-700 / mo for one bedroom is the going rate.. 7,9 km or 4 miles away from the downtown core you can find a one bedroom for $500 a month
Metro system is extensive, monthly pass is $68 a month, $38 a month with student or senior discount (im using it, i have one year before I turn 25, and the party`s over LOL)
gas is 1.03 per liter or 3.89 per gallon
Beer is usually $24 for 24, $8 per 6 and groceries usually end up being $200ish a month or less depending on how much I eat.
Its hard to find a cell phone plan under $40, it`s Canada after all...
But still I think it`s pretty cheap compared to most US cities.. Am I wrong?
Wow Montreal doesn't sound so bad. However liqour, beer, and gas is usually cheaper in the U.S compared to Canada. In my state of Hawaii gas is 36 cents cheaper(which says a lot considering how far from everything we are). However rent is probably a little more over where I am.

Houston and Dallas are very cheap with a very affordable housing
Charlotte doesn't quite have a million people yet but most everything is comparable to those prices....and IMO, the awesome weather and central location makes those prices even more likable!
You can find 1-2 bedroom apartments within 4 miles of uptown under $700 a month.
Unlimited monthly pass on the CATS system (public transportation) runs from $60 to $120 a month for adults.
Gas, today, is about $2.55 a gallon.
A case of beer usually runs about $16.99 but can often get it on special at the grocery store for as little as $9.99.
You can get a cell phone plan for as little as $30 a month or unlimited talk and text $50 on average.
I'm thinking that Chicago, Houston, Dallas and Philadelphia would be the cheapest for cities with at least a million people within city limits.
