When you get familiar with NYC it becomes very much the most walkable city in the nation.

I don't get your point. NYC has lots of walkable areas as does Chicago, but who says you have to walk between them? The whole point of walkability is to be able to walk to all the places you need to go withing an area. I live a a high walkability neighborhood, but I have no reason to walk across town to other walkable neighborhoods.

I voted for San Francisco. And I wish I could vote for Jersey City, but it doesn't seem to be an option.

IMHO, San Francisco is the only one deserving of this title. I don't care what anyone else here says either.

I don't like to walk up steep hills so SF, while dense, is definitley not the most walkable. NYC, Boston, Philly and to a bit of a lesser extent D.C. are by far the most wakalble cities, even most of they're inner suburbs are walkable, because these cities developed when the automobile was unimaginable let alone takin into consideration

According to these sources it goes SF, NYC and Boston as the top 3, with Chicago coming in 4th. (The 2nd and 3rd one seem to reference the first link though.)

San Francisco most walkable U.S. city, website says | Reuters

Pretty similar to this poll for the most part, so it seems like most folks have the right idea.

I agree with this assessment. I hear what people are saying in regards to SF's hills, but if someone wanted to walk from North Beach to Chinatown to Union Square to SOMA to the Mission to Hayes Valley or the Castro it could be done without walking up virtually any hills at all. Many SF neighborhoods blend into each other and are pretty convenient to the next, so I believe that's why SF gets ranked so high. But I'm not surprised people here on C-D are voting for NYC over it b/c not only is it the most convenient city for one to not have a car in, but that's also just the way things work here on C-D.

NYC is without a doubt the most walkable city. Virtually every neighborhood is walkable.

And, yes, I think good public transit is a part of walkability. There is no way a large city can be "walkable" without public transit. NYC tends to be very pedestrian friendly and is pedestrian-scale. It makes walking longer distances easier.

The next two would be San Francisco and Boston. Both have wall-to-wall walkable neighborhoods and both are dense and pedestrian friendly.

Philly and DC would be next, and then I'd say Chicago. Chicago has some very large walkable swaths, but overall the urban fabric of the city is not as pedestrian friendly as the others. If you cut Chicago off and only included loop, near north, west town, northern sections, etc it would be higher on the list. But even in those areas there are sections that are not particularly walkable.

Also, Portland is a very walkable city. You can easily get anywhere by walking, and it has sections that feel more urban than one would expect. The lack of a skyline really causes people to underestimate Portland.

nyc. we walk everywhere, with or without public transportation.
while i wouldn't walk from queens to manhattan, i've walked all around queens and all around manhattan.

as stated, one doesn't really need to leave a borough. there is everything within that borough...having access to other boroughs is a bonus, IMO.
