Actually, San Francisco has a more distinct image and is more iconic than all but 1 or 2 American cities. Maybe 3.
Most on the East Coast only(ignorantly) think of Alcatraz, the GG bridge, Gayness/hippies, and the 49ers(especially of the 80's) when they think of SF.
The same way on the west coast most think of Rocky, Cheesteaks, history class, and old industrial urban blight when they think of Philly.
Obviously there is alot more to both places than the cliches, but that is the true perception held by the ignorant masses outside those regions.
Whoa don't bring my thread into this. San Diego and Philadelphia actually are good comparisons. At least their population range is in the same ball park.
Their lifestyles are polar opposites, their scenery as well, and everything else.
Comparing Tampa to San Francisco is like comparing Albuquerque (no offense, it's a beautiful city) to Phoenix. You just can't do that.
And by the way, this thread was made so that way you could hate on San Francisco. Ironic much, that you wail on SF all the time, then make this thread comparing two cities in different ball parks, and then you say you're for Tampa and state that you love SF, only to have someone post your previous posts about how much you hate it?
WTH, dude put the bottle of Vodka down and start drinking more water before you get on CD.

See what I mean, this is really about Philadelphia and San Francisco. Tampa is just your excuse to inject Philly into the discussion.
And as far as what people know, let's dispense with our own personal opinions and look at what people around the world have said on the issue:

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^much closer in population
San Diego isn't built to be a dense city Killakoolaide.
San Diego 1.2 million, Philadelphia 1.5 million.
The metro population has 2 million of a difference, but anything 3 million or so is worth comparing, because they're already established big cities. By the way, hating on SD much? Because it's a more popular tourist destination then your city?
Get over it. You hate for San Francisco is evident. Why don't you compare the population of Tampa metro/city to San Francisco's and then tell me how close of a comparison this truly is. They are light years apart.
