What is your favorite college town in the south? Could be for a sports following, alumni, or you could have just had a good in Chapel Hill. I'm interested to hear what the simalaraties and differences are between other college tows with noteriety such as Boulder CO, Berkeley CA, and Cambridge MA. I left out Florida as it just seems to be in it's own league apart from other southern states and if the thread included Texas the Austin would steal most of the sunshine. So I went with GA, The Carolinas and Virginia.

Oh those choices Chapel Hill

If Florida were included it would be UF for the sports, FSU for the girls.

Columbia is a college town, but not in the sense of Athens, Chapel Hill, and Charlottesville, where the entire town literally revolves around the university. Clemson would have been a better choice for SC. Probably could have thrown in Oxford, MS and Auburn, AL too.

I voted for Athens. Culturally, Athens has more going on than the other three cities, due to the larger student body at UGA and the local music scene.
Cultural rankings
1. Athens
2. Chapel Hill
3. Charlottesville
4. Columbia
If you just focus on physical attractiveness, it finishes last, but keep in mind that UVA and UNC are two of the most beautiful campuses in the country.
1. Charlottesville
2. Chapel Hill
3. Columbia
4. Athens

Very interesting thread. I voted Chapel Hill because that town is only known for the school. Great town and the vibe is catered towards the college crowd. Athens is an extremely close second and could easily be the best.

Athens, GA is the winner in my book, hands down. That place is a blast. You have a good music scene, lots of bars, a huge stadium, all within walking distance of campus.

My brother lives in Charlottesville. We joke about how insular that place is. They have one neighborhood that is sort of rough, but by the way local people talk you'd think you were in Mogadishu. Just an extremely WASPy, fratty sort of la-la land full of SWPL.

I am not real familiar with Chapel Hill. Compared to the other 3, Columbia is wild. It is a gritty place, without the caliber of students that you find at UNC or UVA. Lots of fun, but not a "college town" exactly.

True, Miami should be up there, I love Coral Gables such a beautiful area. Miami isn't a "college town" though, it's a major city, technically you could say Coral Gables though, which is in Miami-Dade County.
