I'm talking population. NYC has 22 million in its metro, LA has 18 million, London has 13 million, Paris has 10 million, Tokyo has 33 million, Mexico D.F. has 25 million, and São Paolo has 20 million.

This just goes to show that size, while important, isn't all that matters. Do Mexico City and Sao Paolo have the wealth and global importance of NYC?

It can only if all of its activity its in Manhattan. What im saying is whats the attraction to NY outside of manhattan.

flushing, queens has a chinatown that is almost as big as manhattan's.

Agreed. However, New York manages to compile favorable features of other cities into one package.
That said, I'm not trying to be a New York booster implying that other cities suck -- I can completely see why people would prefer other cities in the U.S. to New York (which can be overly expensive, over-crowded, and too-fact-paced). IMO, New York offers the most thorough urban experience in the U.S., but not necessary the best quality of life.
