You hit it right on the spot. I was born and raised in Cleveland. In a nostalgic sort of way I will always love Cleveland as my hometown but I no longer wish to live there. Cleveland's issues were not easily visible to me until I traveled cross country and found many locations that were better for a variety of reasons. I fell in love with the west and now reside near Tucson, AZ. You can spend your whole life in Cleveland waiting for the city to come back so to speak, I think a quarter of a century was enough for me. In my case the grass was greener on the other side.......even though we don't have any grass......LOL
Loved:
1. The Metroparks
2. Ethnic shops
3. Slavic village....before old ladies getting beat to death in their driveways over 10 bucks by teenage thugs
4. Nicer suburbs: Brecksville, Segamore Hills, Northfield Center, Macedonia, Aurora, Richfield, Hinkley
5. Brandywine Falls
6. Stan Hewett Hall in Akron
7. Squire's Castle
8. Coventry Rd. in Cleveland Hts.
9. Summit, Portage and Geauga counties
Hated:
1. Too much precipitation ruining many outdoor plans.
2. Single digit cold snaps with negative wind chills.
3. Shoveling the driveway.
4. Cabin Fever
5. Unpredictable weather with many gray days.
6. Having to take a day off from work to enjoy the sunshine....Spring Fever
7. Mowing the lawn......you don't have to mow the rock garden here and if you want green......just plant some cacti and leave it alone.
8. Underpayed employment in certain industries with a degree, if you're lucky enough to find a job.
9. Many depressed people.....lack of sunshine?......SAAD?.....who knows?
10. Rampant racism that goes both ways.
11. High crime rate
12. Ghettos
13. Affordable housing can only be found in the inner city and the further you look the more expensive it gets, including the taxes. The west is more expensive in general but you can still find a house on acreage near a major city without breaking your back with at least 1/3 of the taxes. You can't do that in the surrounding areas of Cleveland. I tried, and found a waaay better deal in AZ.
In all seriousness, if anyone moves to Cleveland to be near their family, or go to school, or for a good paying job in the medical field etc., I can't see any other reason that would be worthwhile. There are better choices out there.
