Question about Cleveland Neighborhoods
Hello everyone,
I am up for a job in Cleveland and have a few questions about the city that would help me a lot if anyone can help:
-I have read on this forum that the East Side of Cleveland is a problematic area to be avoided, but I cannot tell exactly where the problem area is; could anyone tell me what are the boundaries of the bad part (i.e. within which street[s] to what street[s], etc.).
Also are there other areas that one should avoid due to crime or other problems?
-The place I might be working is in the area of the University Hospitals of Cleveland (which near the intersection of Chester Ave. and Euclid Ave.) Can anyone recommend safe (and friendly) neighborhoods (especially suburb style neighborhoods) within reasonable driving distance of this area?
-How would you rate the public transportation system? It it decent/safe or should it be avoided?
Thanks a lot for your time

If I was you I'd live in The Heights like Cleveland Heights,Shaker Heights,University Heights. There all nice, and have low crime rates, plus all these cities are close to University Hospitals.Avoid the city limits of Cleveland right now.I still think its a great city, but its going through some rough times right now. Most of Cleveland's suburbs are safe and don't have much crime, like the ones I suggested to you.The westside has some nice neighborhoods, but commute times would definetly be longer. You can get to University Hospitals pretty easily from one of The Heights cities.

I have to agree with CTownNative stay out of the city limits, especially the Eastside. The worst areas of the city are from East 55th to East 105th between St. Clair and Union Ave. Stay out of the city of East Cleveland too which is just as bad as the Eastside of Cleveland. Other than that most cities and suburbs in the Cleveland area are safe. Euclid isnt too bad as long as you get a good neighborhood. Shaker Heights is also a pretty nice place with good public transportation.
Public transportation in the city is pretty good for a city of Clevelands size. The RTA rapid and the other lines arent too good compared to Chicagos L or NYC subway system but there okay.

CTownnative and Cle440 are so right. Definately stay out of East Cleveland, it isn't to far from University Hospitals. There is a lot of low income families there and I see prostitutes sometimes wandering around Euclid Ave near Shaw up to Noble Rd. by the motels. There aren't any trains that go near Chester and Euclid AVE, but I believe the #6 bus goes that way. I heard that bus runs really slow. But if you live in Shaker or Cleveland Heights and want to take public transportation downtown for any reason, the Shaker trains run every 10 minutes during peak hours and every 20-30 minutes during normal hours. I'm not to sure about the Windermere Rapid which goes from Euclid Ave in East Cleveland all the way to Hopkins Airport. Click on this link- Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority is a good website to check out in regards to our public transportation system.

I live in Old Brooklyn, and I love it here! There are some nice homes for sale in the South Hills area. Definitely worth looking into. I used to work @ University Hospital, and it took me about 40 minutes to get there from here. Traffic is really heavy in the AM.

The place to be is Shaker Heights as it's close to University Circle (you can get the Rapid from plenty of stops along the Shaker Boulevard line (the green line) and Shaker is full of UH people and has great schools (Onaway is a fantastic elementary school and the Fernway neighborhood and elementary school are also excellent). Depending on your price range, the Fernway and Malvern neighborhoods have wonderful houses and Malvern is in the leafy, parkland area. I would definitely check both those neighborhoods out with a realtor! Any of those streets near the Shaker Country club and golf course area are safe, beautiful and friendly. There are also plenty of apartment options, and the Lomond neighborhood (Lynnfield Road or adjacent streets) has some nice two-family houses and is close to the Van Aken RTA (blue line) if you're looking to rent before you buy. Good luck!

I agree with everyone who recommend the eastern suburbs like shaker, clevleand hts, university hts. i grew up in CLeveland heights and lived there until 2005. anyplace in cleveland heights is great except for that 1 mile stretch of Noble road travelling south from monticello blvd right down to the east cleveland borderline.

Please tell me about the schools. I am contemplating accepting a job with a CRO company in Painesville. Schools are very important to me as I have children whose ages would place them in elementary, middle and high schools...please tell me what you know!!
