I personally don't think sec 8 has anything with cleveland property downfall...its due to poor investments, lack of maintenance, low renovations and high taxes. There are good people on sec 8 and i find it rather ridiculous blaming everyone on section 8 for cleveland's depleting real estate market...BOOOOOOO!!!!! By the way I am not a sec8 voucher holder either, I have a 62k income so please save the negative attacks!
I agree. The upkeep of the property is the responsibility of the landlord.
Last thing to say about Rodney King is this: Blacks should not have rioted and the Government should have cracked down on them so hard that they would rather eat **** than riot, because apparently, that is what it would take.

The biggest part of the problem was the lenders - it was capitalism run amok. *They* are the "experts" - the citizenry must be able to trust them. We shouldn't have to get a financial degree in order to trust the mortgage companies and banks. Not only that, our society is set up as an ownership society. It's supposed to be the American dream to own your own home. But the gap between have and have not is widening. Those in the lower half of our economic scale get shafted either way, and it's getting worse. It now affects the middle class. It's difficult to own a home now, but if you rent, you are just as vulnerable. Rent prices are outrageous, landlords are slow to fix problems, decaying homes and buildings are blamed on the renters, and on and on......
Does anyone have an opinion on what is happening with neighborhoods such as Shaker Heights, University Heights, and Cleveland Heights? There are tons of homes on the market and the prices are going down. I realize the whole mortgage debacle doesn't help the situation and the economy is in bad shape, but is there more going on here, i.e. are these areas permanently losing population? Are they dying cities?

Two days ago AOL featured Akron Ohio on their list of places where one can get a fabulous deal on a home...4 bdrm 3 bath English Tudor house very big....$43,000.00.
I'm almost foaming at the mouth to move back home, Lord I could pay cash for a house and semi retire.....hence therein lies the problem...still need to work at least part time to pay taxes and utilities....NO JOBS. Ohio is now at an all time 17 year high for unemployment, that is mostly why so many homes are for sale. No work, people want to leave to find the elusive jobs, and many are finally giving up and just walking away.

Renting an apartment/house/part of a house/room does not = checking into The Ritz Carlton Hotel. You should contribute to the maintenance of any place that you live in and you should do it cheerfully.
Before you borrow money from anyone, you should be reasonably certain that you can pay the loan back, at the terms specified in the contract. If you cannot understand the contract, you should not sign it (even if you really want to).

Cleveland was on the list and you are exactly right: a loss of jobs = a loss of population. So, as long as Cleveland continues to shed jobs, it will continue to shed people. Of course Cleveland isn't unique; Free Trade is taking jobs away from virtually every city in America and giving them to some other city, in some other country. Exactly. Do you know how many cities across this country have watched their unemployment rates literaly triple in one years time. In just the last few months the unemployment rates have risen some .5% which is bad.
The national economy is almost at a 6% unemployment rate, not good at all. But remember.... Bush says our economy is doing good, so these numbers must be wrong.
