Hello I have actually been to Lorain Ohio to go to a Puerto Rican festival. Trust me you will not be happy with Lorain moving from Arizona. It is a town with factories bellowing smoke and there is much poverty with a poor performing school system.

I grew up in Shaker Hts, then lived in Clevelend Hts for 15 years. They rate as the #1 and #2 highest property tax communites in Ohio. Both have very nice areas, and both have less than desireable areas. Shaker is known as a rich community, full of beautiful grand old homes and parks. Cleveland Hts is more eclectic and artsy. South Euclid is a nice, but boring suburb, directly inbetween Cleveland Hts and Mayfield Hts. Less crime than Cleveland Hts, but not as "historic" or pretty. Schools are better in S. Euclid. Go online and find the PlainDealer (local newspaper) website, there are tons of rental properties in all the suburbs.
Lorain.....not too familiar w/ it, but would not consider moving there myself due to what I've heard about it. Lorain is on the West side of Cleveland, all the other suburbs you mention are East side.
I actually just moved about 45 miles south of Cleveland to a small town, and have put my house in Cleveland Hts on the market. The MLS # is 2416078 and its listed w/ HowardHanna Realtors.
Good luck w/ your move, and save some $$$ for all the winter clothes you'll be needing!

Just out of curiosity, how would you describe Mayfield Heights?
I just ask because I may be moving to Cleveland soon and I've looked at all the neighborhoods I can online, but starting to think that way out there (near Mayfield Heights, S. Euclid, etc.) is the only area I can live where crime isn't a factor and where I'll likely never be a victim of anything (according to the numbers).
I've looked at places like Shaker and University Heights, but after the statistics and various news I've read, I'm not thoroughly convinced. Am I just wrong?
(BTW, I'm sure people are sick of outsiders asking advice about the neighborhoods, but I think a lot of us have an appreciation for the Clevelanders who respond and help; it's a bright point of the city among the negatives that exist)

In the 1970's - early 1990's, Mayfield Hts was home to a large Italian immigrant population. Very safe place if you were caucasion. In recent years, it has become a mecca to Russian immigrants for some reason. I am not saying there is a correlation, but Mayfield Hts has become a less desireable area as of late. Not a bad place, but not as good as it used to be. It has also become very over-populated in my opinion. No "green spaces" at all. But you can go half a mile east and be in the county if you want. The schools are still highly rated, though. Houses are small, but well maintained. It also has very convenient access to I-271 and I-90. Personally, I try to avoid Mayfield Hts due to the traffic congestion. Try looking at Mayfield Village. I think they use the same school system. It's a more expensive area than Mayfield Hts, but much much nicer, and it borders Mayfield Hts. If you have deeper pockets, Gates Mills or Hunting Valley are both 2 minutes from Mayfield Hts, and either one would be my 1st choice if I had the money to afford it.
Your gonna have crime anywhere you live in NorthEast Ohio, typicaly the cities will be more violent, and the suburbs have more property-related crimes. Buy a big dog. Best deterrent there is.
Hope this helps you a little. Now if only someone would answer my ??'s about Ellicottville NY !

Can I make a suggestion? The CITY of East Cleveland is a bad neighborhood. For example, due to a poor budget, the city is requiring its fire fighters to cut grass in parks. Also, they are having difficulty with paying for garbage pickup. My suggestion would be to stay out of East Cleveland. Areas that you may enjoy from living in Arizona are Mayfield Hts, Shaker Hts, University Hts, and Cleveland Hts. Also, you may want to consider areas in Lake County such as Mentor, Willowick, Willoughby, Painesville(some parts) or Wickliffe. The benefits of living in Lake County are cheaper sales tax, city taxes for your propery, cheaper car insurance, and nicer areas.
What are you interested more urban, suburban, charm of older homes?

East cleveland is a very dangerous neighborhood, such as Woodland, Kinsman, Scovill, E.50th-E100th, after that your in the Cleveland Clinic area which is a lot safer but I can confidently say as from being there it's not a nice place, but if you keep heading east you come into Shaker area. Those are fancy houses and a usually higher class area. I would suggest Mayfield. About 15 miles from Dwontown and not alot of crime.

How far do you want to commute? There are nice places to live, but you will drive about an hour or so into Cleveland. The east side of Cleveland is not a place to even consider living in. Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula counties are better. It's quieter in these areas and much more pleasant.

I wouldn't even DRIVE through East Cleveland with my doors locked in the middle of the day.
It's Better in Mentor!
I know it seems farther than you described but from Mentor to Mayfiend is 15-20 mins. on the freeway.
Seriously, its safe, with excellent schools, public transportation, lots of shopping and jobs. Housing market is really good for buyers right now (but really bad for sellers, like me... about 11 houses per buyer)
The nearest "unsafe" area is probably some parts of Painesville which is a good 15 minute drive to the east and to the west, a good 25-30 min drive to anything really bad.
