It is not 1989 or the mid 90s anymore. The most gay friendly, gay livable, and progressive city on gay legislation is Columbus. Columbus is the highest OH city, on that list by HRC, which is rating local/county LGBT friendly legislation. Inclusion mandates from the school district, lgbt friendly police department standards, a domestic partner registry, and more show Columbus' inclusion of its lgbt community. It has safer gay friendly neighborhoods, etc. One can argue cleveland vs columbus, but at this point it is very hard to argue columbus is less gay/lgbt friendly than columbus. I think many don't realize how much has changed.
Columbus also has the better, more vibrant bar scene between the two cities. Or at least it did last time I was there.

I used to love to go down to Columbus for Pride Weekend every June back in the late '80s to mid '90s.

The scene has changed a ton since the mid 90s. Its more about high end LGBT lounges, restaurants, and nice clubs. It moved more towards the short north. And the neighborhoods around downtown. I would say its not as club oriented and more mixed/lounge oriented. Which is a sign of how progressive the lgbt community is. No more windowless (old school) bars for cbus.

In Order of Best

1. Tremont
2. Ohio City
3. Detroit Shoreway
4. Downtown
5. Gold Coast
6. Coventry

Those that still say Lakewood (meaning Gold Coast which is more Cleveland and Lakewood) are still living in the 80's.
Where did you end up?
