Hahahaha, that's funny. There are some very good magnet schools in the CMSD, such as John Hay (which outperforms many of its suburban counterparts, Cleveland School of the Arts, and charter schools like E-Prep and Citizens Academy.

Public School Districts
Rocky River, Chagrin Falls, Orange, Shaker Heights, Bay Village . Orange is the richest district but the real rich there send their kids to private schools locally or boarding schools out of state. Go a little further out and Hudson, Aurora and Solon are also very good.

Private Schools
Lake Ridge Academy K-12 (Co-Ed), Hawken K-12 (co-Ed), Western Reserve Academy 9-12 (Co-Ed), University School K-12 (Boys), Hathaway Brown K-12 (girls), Laurel K-12 (Girls), Birchwood School K-8 (Co-ed) are the top tier in the area. The next wave are Gilmour Academy 1-12 (Co-Ed), Ruffing Montessori K-8 (Co-ed), Beaumont 9-12 (girls), Menlo Park Academy K-8 (co-ed).

Too many Catholic k-8 and high schools across the region to list. Some more known are Holy Name HS, Padua HS, St. Edward HS, St. Ignatius HS, Trinity HS, Benedictine HS, Magnificat (HS), St. Joesph HS, Villa Angelo-Saint Joseph HS, St. Raphael (k-8) , Lakewood Catholic Academy (k-8), St. Christopher (K-8) etc.

Solon has some of the best schools in the city. Mixed racial, but still majorly white. They have good teachers and more advanced classes than you can think of.

Agree with all of the above. The differences between Shaker, Beachwood, Orange, and Chagrin Falls have more to due with population demographics than the kind of education a child would receive, I think.

One interesting case (and not necessarily good) is University Heights. Even though we're returning to Cleveland east side this summer, we won't be returning to the house we still own in UH. While I'm not necessarily down on the combined Cleveland Heights-University Heights schools as a whole, they closed the only elementary school in UH. That's a crappy situation as it forces all the young kids across town instead of being able to walk. But the local church, Gesu, has quite a good school for a fraction of the price of Hawken/Hathaway Brown/Laurel.

Full disclosure: We are currently searching for houses in Shaker Heights.

Actually Gearity will remain open. Originally they had planned on closing Gearity and sending all UH students to Canterbury (which isn't really across town, but is inconvenient for those living in eastern UH), however there was a backlash and the decision to close it was overturned. It has been decided, though, that Wiley Middle School in UH will be closing at the end of the year.

Really? The plan & backlash was occurring just as we left. I'm not there to verify myself, but the website sure makes it look like Gearity did indeed close its doors. And yes, Canterbury is perfectly fine of western UH. But for those of us wishing to encourage walking and avoid buses, Gearity is really important to eastern UH.

Cleveland Heights - University Heights City School District - Gearity Professional Development School

I had no idea Wiley was shutting down. That's a big bummer, although not quite as important as local elementary schools.

I went to school in this district, currently live here, and still follow the local news very closely. I can assure you that Gearity is still open (in fact all of the CH-UH elementary schools are, none have been closed yet) and it will remain open for a long time. District officials know that they cannot close the only remaining elementary school in UH.

LFC vote recommends Gearity as UH elementary school, geothermal in all buildings - The Heights Observer

The above article is worded a bit strangely because there had also been discussion of potentially locating an elementary school on what is currently the Wiley Middle School property, but the point is that UH will have an elementary school moving forward and that Gearity will be that school.

Well that's fantastic news. A bummer about Wiley, though. But still, if I had to choose one, I choose the elementary.

I think most parents and homeowners would, which is why there was such a fight for it.
