Well thanks HAS, I appreciate it. Yeah, I agree, paintballer seems like he can help! Did you guys end up with snow last night? I haven't dealt with winters and snow in 6 years!
And english teacher, thank you too, great info that I will take in to consideration. Pitbull, thanks for your input as well. You all have been very nice and very helpful, and it is greatly appreciated!

Pittbull, what are you talking about. Cleveland is a great city. I could barely understand what you wrote. I had trouble reading it. You dont seem to be well informed on the city itself. I was an urban planner there just a few months ago before i made the move to Cincy. Cleveland is a great city, i would choose the suburbs over the city, but there are a lot of nice housing units going in. Detroit is a city to fear, not Cleveland. Cleveland is just like Minneapolis.

No snow yet this season as of right now (5:15 pm on Friday). I hear we're getting some tonight... . Oh well, it's not like it's going to stick or anything; just an annoyance. And don't worry, you'll get back into the swing of things after six years of aviodance... , especially coming in January!

Thanks paintballer. You and everyone else have said nothing but nice things about Cleveland, well other than pitbull. So I'm feeling optimistic about it. I hope Cincy is going well for you.

Regarding the safety of the city of Cleveland, I have to agree with pitbull. According to the most recent annual "America's Safest (and Most Dangerous) Cities" report from Morgan Quitno press, Cleveland is the 12th most dangerous of the 369 cities in the country (not surprising considering that it's the poorest major city in the country). I can tell you from first-hand experience that most of the neighborhoods in the city itself are dangerous (and the ones that aren't dangerous aren't very far from ones that are). OTOH, the downtown area is relatively safe and Cleveland does have quite a few nice, safe suburbs; however, I would not want to live in the suburbs that border the city.

If you don't want to experience ridculous amounts of snow, you would be better off with the western suburbs. The northwest part of Cuyahoga County (which includes places such as Bay Village, Westlake and Rocky River) is the least snowiest part of the county, averaging around 50" per year. The eastern and southeastern suburbs get the most snow, with some spots averaging more than 100" per year and many averaging more than 80".

Great Cleveland Neighborhoods
I'm from Cleveland, currently living in Europe, and I miss Cleveland everyday. It's a great place to live--affordable, friendly, great restaurants, museums, and top quality medical care. Also great green spaces and parks, not to mention the lake.
Okay, as for neighborhoods. If you're looking to spend 150K or less on a home, here are my recommendations:
On the East Side (my preferred side of town):
South Euclid - beautiful homes mostly under 150K, convenient to shopping, entertainment, etc. Not too far from downtown
Lyndhurst - ditto South Euclid, but a few minutes further east
University Heights - Just south of South Euclid, has a university, great shopping, near Rapid Train line
On the West Side:
Lakewood is nice, family oriented, beautiful older homes, sits on the lake, affordable and friendly, near downtown
The eastern edge of Rocky River is nice and perhaps still affordable.
If I were you I'd avoid the south side of town. There tends to be lots of traffic, and strip malls. I'm not keen on Independence, Parma, Seven Hills, Garfield Heights, etc. but that's just me. Also, Brookpark is very, well not to be rude, but it's just kind of icky. Strip clubs, big box stores, traffic. It is near the airport though...
The only area in the city itself I'm really familiar with is Ohio City/near west side. There are some beautiful older homes there, but it's getting pricey. I lived there in the 90s, but it was really affordable then. Can't speak about schools as I don't have kids.
The east side definitely gets more snow. Stay away from Geauga County to the east if you don't like snow. I grew up there and I think it's worse than Alaska. Very long, snowy winters.
I thought I saw you ask about Ravenna in a previous post?! Avoid it at all costs. First, it's about an hour from Cleveland. Second, it is an economically very depressed town. The downtown is mostly vacant buildings. Not at all dynamic. If you want to live that far from Cleveland center, I suggest Kent. It sits right next to Ravenna, has a great university, nice houses, a vibrant community. Still a 45 minute commute to Cleveland--maybe more in rush hour--but it's a great town.
I hope you find a great place in Cleveland. Hope you'll love it as much as I do!
Oh yeah, if you like baseball, Cleveland has a terrific stadium too.

youyou, thank you! awesome info.
well when i first started this thread, i was just listing all the suburbs that i saw on the map around cleveland, just trying to get feedback on where to look, and where to stay away from. i have since eliminated some, ravenna being one of them. everyone's responses have really helped us get a feel for the cleveland suburbs, with out ever being there. obviously we'll learn more once we actually move there, but at least we have ideas now.
oh i know, can you tell me anything about maple heights?
anyway, we are pretty excited about this move, we both have a good feeling that we're going to like it in cleveland. it seems like there will be so much to do, especially with all the sports...we're gonna love that!
