Hi HopeToComeHome -- My wife (and two kids) lived in the DC area for 19 years before moving back to Greater Cleveland for many of the same reasons as you and we couldn't be happier. Being a REALTOR, I know first hand the differences and costs in housing, let alone the other things you mentioned.

I love to hear all the positives about Cleveland! TheProf's big post with activities is the kind of thing I counter with to friends (residents and non-residents) who knock the city. CoolCleveland.com has a weekly newsletter outlining activities for families and those with an arts and music or social responsibility bent. There's a thriving arts scene, a still-thriving music scene, and local activites at community centers, libraries and parks year-round.
My take on Cleveland is "as good as is is as bad as it is." The winter sucks, the summer is glorious. There are nasty inner-city pockets, there are great walkable neighborhoods. We're not NY or LA, we don't pay NY or LA prices for anything.
I could go on, and for every negative, I can find a positive. I've lived all over NE Ohio, in Cleveland, the suburbs, and the exurbs. I'd live downtown if I could (someone want to buy the Pinnacle's penthouse for me? ) and for now I love living in Lakewood, in a walkable, friendly, affordable neighborhood.

If your rich of coarse you can do mall this and most people are just try keep there job and put food on table. You must be rich do that all time. Cleveland could use more outdoor venue were don't have go broke to do anything worth while. I do like westside market. People on here don't make sense. To do what the poster said can cost pretty penny to some of these venue. I been there and done that.

I agree it a shame what happening to Cleveland and all the corruption going and all the politician going to prison or loose there power base. One of the reason Cleveland has a black eye. Nobody that our in leadership anything to make Cleveland great when have crooks running the city and milking the city what do you expect.

Yes, we do have our problems. We our a major city, last time I checked most major cities have their problems. I just got back from vacation, and even the so-called booming areas of the country are facing so many problems. Down in Florida, my one friend's development had so many houses with the orange papers on the front doors telling you that it is foreclosed.
Its nice to hear people say how much Cleveland has changed since the 80s or even the 90s. Cleveland is on the rebound, but we will not hide our problems. The first step to making the city better is facing these problems and tackling them.

How can we tackle the problems when we have corrupt politician and leader that they only care about is jobs and power and money?? You have to clean up the crooks before wan do anything and ones that implement these our the greedy people running Cleveland and this been going on forever in Cleveland.

I will agree with you on the fact that Mayor Frank Jackson is a joke! But Cleveland has a lot to offer whether you want to see that or not. It is a very livable city, has some very attractive city neighborhoods, and is rich in history. Don't bring Cleveland down because of its leaders and politicians, because then you are doing the same thing as them. The people must be positive and have faith in their cities, but by the way you talk in your posts, it seems as if you have given up faith in Cleveland just because of its leaders.
The economy sucks right now all across the country, and every city is suffering. Cleveland has an extremely promising future ahead of it, and some awesome projects in the works. Give Cleveland a chance, and forget the city leaders right now, they are all jokes. You must have faith in Cleveland.

Michael, I'm sorry if I gave you the impression I'm rich
Most of my choices are free and cheap - you like the West Side Market, do you go to the festivals in the park across the street every weekend (free)?
The Art Museum is free. The zoo is free for Cleveland residents on certain days. The Metroparks are free. The libraries hold free lectures, demonstrations and concerts. There are the Thursday night free music and arts performances downtown. And these are just a few off the top of my head. With a few minutes and Google, I could find hundreds of free events in the Cleveland metro area.

I've been noticing that most of Cleveland's biggest fans are home-grown. I'm sure transplants can enjoy the great things Cleveland has to offer, but for the most part, the ones defending the city loudest grew up here. It seems that most of the ones returning here after moving away are the ones who were born here. I think nostalgia and home town pride play a role in believing in Cleveland. My hubby is a Cleveland fan and his fondest memories are here.
