Actually the city proper gets tons of praise from out of towners. I've never heard my friends from Chicago say OH WOW, Brunswick is soooo cool! Now when they talk about Downtown, OC, Tremont, Gordon Square, etc... People have very favorable opinions.

I'd say 99% of the time the response is either favorable or that they are unfamiliar. There's a sparse few who crack a "Cleveland joke," but not too many.

Mostly, this complex exists with the average, local news watching suburbanite who starts to get the shakes when they're more than 3 miles away from home.

This is very true. I hope this population of people will have already totally left by the time I move back. It's the thing I disliked probably most about being in Cleveland- the local negativity (though certainly not shared by everybody).

I think there has been a bit of a paradigm shift in the negativity in recent years. Among my friends and the other people I know here (including some Hispanic immigrants) there is actually a good amount of Cleveland pride.

I think these days Cleveland is known for two things: hard-luck sports teams and Great Lakes beer. And that hilarious ghetto dude who found Ariel Castro's victims.

Clouds and snow from October until early June. Summer has like a week of sun. Temps back into the 40s by late August. Life is so unfair.

Spoken like a true Clevelander.

(for those non-natives reading this, it's a joke)

It seems like older folks, esp. 60+ not from Cleveland retain the negative news and image out of Cleveland from the 1960s & '70s. Younger people not as much, if at all. I used to hear a lot of Cleveland bashing in Chicago; esp. from people from places like Toboggan Run, WI or Haystack, IA living in Chicago.
