I've started to notice that the west side of Cleveland is doing a lot better than the east side of Cleveland. By this, I mainly mean within the city of Cleveland limits. I've noticed that most of the schools are better on the west side than the east side, the streets usually look nicer, there are less abandoned houses and foreclosures, it's usually safer, there's more entertainment such as bars, restaurants, markets, European Deli's, concerts, and a better lakefront in my opinion. I know that one reason that the east side is a lot worse is the historical racism against African Americans, causing urban ghettos. But considering that ended over 50 years ago, I would like to know why it is still in such bad shape.

The bad neighborhoods are in worse shape, IMO, if I could average all of the neighborhoods of the east side together and get one figure and all of the west side neighborhoods together and get another figure I would say the average of the entire east side of the city proper is not as good as west.

However as I am sure someone here will point out shortly there are some nice neighborhoods as well, but I still stick with my average crappiness scale.

A better lakefront? Most of the West Side's lakefront is industrial. The West Side (of the city proper) has less decay in general than the East, mostly because the housing stock is newer on average, and there are more jobs on the West Side. But I'm assuming you're talking about the gentrifying areas. Yes, the West Side has experienced more gentrification, mostly because it never fell as far as the East Side. Imagine trying to gentrify Fairfax, Kinsman, or Central, it's much harder to picture than it was for many parts of the Near West Side, that never got nearly as decimated. The East Side areas that didn't fall that hard are experiencing some gentrification, such as North Collinwood, Larchmere, and Slavic Village. But much of the East Side is extremely crime ridden, much of the housing stock has decayed beyond repair, there are relatively few remaining businesses. It's much harder to turn an area like that around than an area that just needs a little spit-shining.

Most of the west side's lakefront is industrial? Are you kidding me? Look at a map. There is nothing industrial once you get west of Whiskey island.

If you're referring to the land east of Battery Park that is being developed into another Battery Park type development with over 300 units. Have you seen what the metroparks is doing w/the area around edgewater?

My mistake, I am obviously not that familiar with the West Side. The part that I am familiar with, by the lake, is near the Cargill plant, which is a large industrial area. I mistakenly assumed that this extended further than it actually does.

Who cares, the lines on the map in this region are arbitrary and there are plenty communities east (of the river, let's say) that are doing just fine. This is what happens when a city __________ (fill in the blank). Not sure why the dude that lives in Solon cares about something he already knows the answer to.

Except that he doesn't seem to know the answer at all or even a damn thing about the east side. Also, define "doing better." The east side has 2 major universities, several smaller universities/colleges, a major community college campus, University Circle, many museums, main hospital campuses for 2 of the best hospitals in the world, Little Italy, a booming downtown with the major sports/concert/theater venues (all of which is technically the east side), 95% of the major hotels, a booming "east bank" of the flats, Shaker Square, etc.

How about we state the truth and leave it at that? Both sides of the river face common challenges as well as offer their own unique areas, neighborhoods and experiences.

As stated above, but in question form: Have you ever even been to the east side?

I'll take this one, CC"

No.

But he lives 5 minutes driving distance with no traffic to the border of Cleveland proper where he spends exactly 0% of his time. So he's basically an expert.
