Well, despite the snow, I have decided to take the job in Northeast Ohio and am looking at houses in Mentor. I am excited, and feel very comfortable with the area and my decision. I am happy to be contributing to the increased diversity in the Mentor area.

Good for you! Good luck w/your move. Snow's not that bad.......well, it might be where you're going........can anyone say snowbelt? Snow can be lots of fun though, especially if you have kids. Once again, good luck, i hope you like NE Ohio as much as i do.

As a Caucasian, who has been to Mentor, I can tell you that they do not welcome minorities very easily. This is from an experience I had about 10 years ago, when I was in High School and traveled to Mentor with a Football team from Canton. Even as a white athlete, I was called 'n***er' multiple times by these kids and parents. Half of our team was minorities, and we did enjoy stomping them into the ground. But I will never recommend Mentor, Ohio to be a welcoming place for minorities.

Mentor, for what it's worth, is where A LOT of East Cleveland whites moved when blacks started to move in. I'm not even blaming them -- East Cleveland was becoming a war zone (this was in the late 60's to early 70's). More recently, Mentor has become the landing strip for white flight from Euclid. This is the experience that a lot of people in Mentor have with blacks. Again, I'm not assigning blame to anyone. I'm just saying white people in Mentor might (for very tangible reasons) be more suspicious of blacks than people in other white towns. They saw their old neighborhoods destroyed at the same time blacks moved in.

I have lived in Mentor for over 30 years, and my husband for over 40 years. I live the the area that is called "Old Mentor".
Mentor does have some African Americans, but it also has some Asians and some Hispanics. I have never noticed any problems havign to deal with race or ethnicity in this town. Housing is very affordable, and it always has been. There are some area, though, where the residents are very stable and just don't move. For example, on my street in old Mentor, many of the residents have lived in the city for a long time, or, their kids moved into their homes as the parents left. I don't think there is anything keeping any race or ethnicity out.
This is a great community, but of course like all areas, it has it's problems. Mentor's may be traffic problems, and the occasional drug bust. Every now and then you hear of a robbery, but since it's a town heavy in retail it's almost to be expected.
