Hi.
I am a prospective student applying for Case western University. Do you guys have any advice about the areas surrounding Case?? I know that East Cleveland is ghetto. any other areas a student should avoid? thanks.

Luckily there is an immense police presense in University Circle between Cleveland Police, CWRU Police, and UC Police if safety is your main concern. When I've been on campus, I haven't gone five minutes without seeing a cop car patroling. Almost makes you feel like your doing something wrong half the time. I actually had a friend whose father wouldn't let her go to Case because the surrounding area and made her go to OSU, which has recently reported having the highest numbers of rapes, assaults, and burgularies for a college campus in the nation. Kind of ironic...
Just like anywhere, be careful where you go. You shouldn't have too much reason if any to go into Glenville or Hough which borders Case from the north and east, other than cutting through to go downtown (or to get Hot Sauce Williams!). The remaining borders are Little Italy and Cleveland Hts/Shaker Hts which many students seem to frequent.
Where are you coming from?

My son graduated from case and lived on campus, he never had a problem, but is also quite sensible. The scariest thing was the shooting, I know this will sound like BS, but my brother (FBI SWAT), called me to make sure my son was safe, just before they stormed the building and Bro brought the guy out. He got the key to the city~ no fooling!
He might be moving in the near future though, then all heck may break out :0)

Along with East Cleveland, Hough and Wade Park areas are what you should avoid. I was in the area last Monday going to the museums and seen plenty of students walking around. You should be safe living on campus. As Costello said, there are plenty of cops patrolling the area so you should be fine. A friend of mine had an apartment on Ford & Euclid and she loved it. I hope you get in Case is a very good school. One of my high school classmates got an academic scholarship and I think it paid for half her tuition. She has since graduated and has a very successful career.

No offense, but what about the large percent of "poor" people in Cleveland, or the large population of people living under poverty? Don't they live close to the city??? If so, shere??? And complexsimplicity, most likely I will get in, since I am pretty concerned with grades in hs. and right now I am from Houston, texas.

you should be more worried about the cold winters and snow than about safety... especially coming from texas. If you dont live on campus many students live around overlook st and coventry area

There is a large percent of low income people near the school in the areas I mentioned earlier(Hough, Wade Park, E. Cleve, etc). But, at miller said, its nothing to worry about. If your going to live off campus, this would be a good place to check out...my friend said there was a lot of Case students living in her old building.

The campus itself is pretty safe. Of course theft is probably the main issue. Just don't stray away from campus too much without being smart about it. It is surrounded by a generally poverty stricken area.

Alot of Case students live in Cleveland Hts, near the coventry area. Some even bike to Case during spring and summer. The apartments seems to rent quickly over there. Lots of houses for rent in Cleveland Hts.
