So what does anybody attribute the reduction so far in murders this year? Even on a month by month basis it is down approx. 25%. Does this have to do with the Mayor's new police setup and increased police forces? This is definitely not a national thing either. Chicago, LA, New Orleans, Philly, DC, are all higher than last year most by double digit percentages. I think nationwide it's way up also. Does anybody know if other crimes in the city are also down or if it only homicide?

^^^ Of the cities you mentioned only LA is doing as poorly as last year. The other cities are doing fine. New Orleans is hard to compare because the population keeps growing as people return from Katrina.
In the chart on the previous page, of over 50 cities there's only about ten not having such a good year. The murder numbers come from people who live in the cities on the list. Statistics can get screwed up if for instance you use FBI data. Cleveland had 134 murders last year and the FBI reports 90. They err to the low side for many major cities.
Police depts. are being sold on technology and it's working. When cities put extra cops in the hot spots, crime and murder decreases. Pittsburgh got together with the county police and called in the FBI. They went after known gangs and there wasn't another murder for nearly a month. We've also been adding extra patrols to known drug/gang areas. Our murder rate is way down this year.
As far as other crimes you can look on the site of a city's police dept. - crime statistics - and see how this year compares to last.

Actually there were 135 homicides in Cleveland last year, there was one homicide like on the last day and it wasnt official until a few days later. The FBI needs to get their facts straight. I dont know whos fault this is, maybe the CPD just lied about it to the FBI, or the FBI made yet ANOTHER mistake. It was bad enough in 2006 when Cleveland had 119 and they put it as 75...what is up with that??? In every newspaper and article I heard it was 135, and look at the thread we made "2007 Cleveland Homicides" on this forum, it says it all right there. If anything I think there were more than that, because at one time on Cleveland.com said we already had 147 homicides and this was in November.
I have heard that most other cities are down in homicides too this year. Cleveland is now at 43 I think, and Im pretty sure by this time last year we had nearly 60. As far as the other crimes, I cant say this officially but I think they are about the same, I havent noticed a decrease much in the other categories.

Murders up, overall crime down in 2007- cleveland.com
The city reported 134 slayings. It was the most since 1994, when 141 people were killed.
The FBI has Cleveland at 77 murders for 2006. Reports I've seen claim 114. On our county web site, Pittsburgh is listed at having 57 murders in 2007. The FBI reports this as 52. The misreported figures happens much too often to be a mistake. I wonder what they're up to with the intentional lying?
I've also read where the Census Bureau is low-balling population figures for cities. Those affected say its so they won't qualify for as much federal funds. Several cities have filed suits.
Our tax money is paying the salaries of these people who are lying to and cheating us.

The official reports that I have seen for murders in Cleveland are: 2005-114, 2006-119, and 2007-135. 2005 was originally at 109 but they later added more murders to the that, and 2007 was originally at 134 but there was 1 murder on the last day that was added. I still dont know whats up with those FBI numbers. This has me wondering if all of the years in Cleveland were reported as having less murders than they actually did because of the FBI.
I was looking on the crime chart and it said Cleveland had around 70s-90s from 1999-2004 but now Im wondering if even those stats are wrong and if we actually had more. Either way the FBI is not reliable at all now, I will not trust any of their stats from now on. Maybe the CPD intentionally said they had less murder to make the city look batter on paper and hope that nobody noticed. With all of this combined with all the crimes in the city that arent reported or the police never show up to report them means that Cleveland is even much worse than most people would think.
