Hi guys,

I created a thread lower down trying to get info on this neighborhood:

http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...5_M39269-20012

I got no replies telling me the actual scoop; I have called the PD for that section, the officer who answered said it was safe, "lots of traffic" he said and noisy teenagers but not dangerous.

Then yesterday I phoned the tax office to verify the CRAZY LOW (under $500 per annum) taxes and the lady who answered said yes that was correct as that is in a TERRIBLE and dangerous section! That she would not recommend it at all.

SOMEone who knows CLEVELAND please help me out here.
Both of these folks were very nice on the phone and seemed to want to help, I believed both of them but each said the opposite of the other so I am confused.

Of course each individual's perception of "safe" will vary a bit but I asked SPECIFIC same q's to both the policeman and the office worker like, will it be OK for an older lady living alone, will I get mugged/burglarized/garden gnomes knocked over etc.

I'd like to get reliable intel soon so I can either cross it off my list or go further.

THANK YOU!

The low taxes directly correlates to the low values of the house. Houses in the surrounding area has higher taxes. This house is worth less because of its size.

The suburbs to the south and to the west are quieter and safer, but prices (and taxes) will be higher. Like I mentioned before, if you look up this address in Trulia, and look at the crime map, it shows the area as green/yellow.

I did Trulia, it looks fine to me!
I said that to the office gal!
She EMPHATICALLY restated it was dangerous. Especially for an old bag alone as I shall be.
She said she'd feel bad if she didn't warn me and I ended up dead

She was SO NICE and the cop was too.

I lean towards the cop's statement more but as I am doing this long distance I must rely upon folks' input and when it conflicts THAT much I just go

So I figure if I can get several other folks opinions on here I can get a broader view, not just that of those two kind souls.

Look for some nearby churches or small businesses, and call and ask about the area.

One thing I did when I was looking at neighborhoods in the Dayton area was find a mail carrier who was out walking around and I asked him what his general impression of his "beat" was.

Ack, Joe, I'm not local to there or I'd just ask the neighbors.
I'm dependent upon the kindness of strangers at the moment (though am hardly as lovely as Blanche DuBois).

I don't know anything about the area, sorry. But, I think I'd trust the cop's word, first, too. The police are facing the issues in the neighborhood first-hand, everyday. I can't imagine how the office lady would have the same level of interaction with the neighborhood, and is probably passing along the same stereotypes she's heard from others who don't live there, either.

Default Youngstown?

Perhaps you should read post 14 and on in this thread:

Why are property taxes so high?

Aw WR you are awesome to try to help me in another thread no less, thanks!
This shanty I'm considering is tax assessed at 15K yes fifteen thousand dollars

It is the size of a shed 441sf which is EXACTLY what I desire, a house under 500sf.

If I can find out about the safety of the section it's in I'll be so glad, haven't called any churches yet as I've been out all day but intend to do so and am hoping some native will chime in here as well.

It's been for sale for ages, like over 200 days so it's not like there's a rush, probably no one but me would ever consider it as it's SO small.

I asked the office lady why the cop said it was OK and she speculated that perhaps he didn't want to seem to not be doing his job, i.e., keeping that section safe.
