Hi everyone.

I am moving to the US next month and working at Cleveland Clinic as a researcher.
It will be my first experience of living abroad with my wife and two daughters (8- and 14-years old).

The most important thing to be determined before I leave my country is to choose the best school for my kids. Then, I am able to rent an appropriate house (apartment or townhome..etc).

Some of my friends live in OH recommended several school districts such as Beachwood, Shaker heights, Brecksville-broadview, Orange (woodmere), but I don't have any ideas. I am not sure where safer area is.
Most of them picked Beachwood although the rent is quite high.

It is a big deal to make up my mind which school is the best for my lovely and kind of shy two girls.
Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Are you interested in only public schools, as opposed to parochial schools or private schools? Will you commute by car?

Beachwood is heavily Jewish, and with a smaller, but excellent high school.

Shaker Heights and the Shaker Square area of Cleveland (the most densely populated part of Cleveland) are both in the Shaker Heights school district, which has a very renown advanced placement program, if your daughters are excellent students. Shaker Hts. High School otherwise is large and very diverse. Shaker Square has excellent bus service with University Circle, where the Clinic and Cleveland's renown cultural institutions are located, and many apartment buildings.

Here's one thread that should be helpful.

There are many apartments in University Circle and a brand new high school, but it's a magnet school and unlikely your daughters could be admitted at this late date.

First look: Stylish new Cleveland School of the Arts lives up to gateway site in University Circle | cleveland.com

Mayfield Schools have a good reputation and serve cities such as Mayfield Hts. and Highland Hts., both possibilities for you.

Mayfield City Schools

Brecksvile/Broadview Hts. is very nice, but over a half hour commute, perhaps much longer during rush hour or bad weather, to University Circle.

Use Wikipedia to get background information on cities. E.g.:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland_Heights,_Ohio

Also, check out city websites and consider calling city halls and see if they offer assistance to prospective new residents. Many do so.

Perhaps subscribe to Cleveland Magazine and get the 2015 "Rating the Suburbs Guide," which isn't available online.

http://www.clevelandmagazine.com/ME2...FE5C23B494BD34

You also could consider house rentals.

BTW, I have no preference for Highland Hts. I'm just using it as an example of resources available to you that I would use if in your position. If you use Wikipedia to check out high schools, such as Orange High School, you can determine what communities are served by that high school. However, before signing a lease, confirm that the specific property is indeed serviced by the school district of your choice by calling that school district. The school district also can tell you which elementary and middle schools serve that address. Some communities are split between two very different school districts. E.g., part of Cleveland, around Shaker Square, is in the Shaker Hts. School District, with the rest largely in the Cleveland Public School District.

Good luck!

As I mentioned, my two daughters are 8- and 14-years old.
I am going to send them to public school.

My first daughter is a student in middle school in my country, and I'm just wondering what grade could be fit to her there.
There are 6 grade (1-6) in elemetary school, 3 grade (1-3) in middle school, and 3 grade (1-3) in high school in my country. I'm not sure how the school grade system in US is organized, but I think it could be better that she may get one grade-down enroll due to her short English proficiency.

I will commute by car.
So, is it better to buy 2 cars for commute and for kid's ride/pickup if I live Beachwood or SH or Orange district.

It's kind of getting nervouse as time goes by.
There is nothing to be done.

What country are you coming from? I ask because certain school districts that you're looking at have higher percentages of non-black/white students that may help your daughters feel more comfortable given all the changes.

Ask whatever district about their EASL programs.

Yes, you'll probably need two cars.

I have a plan to move from Korea to OH.
Does EASL mean English as a second language?

Many friends recommended Beachwood for school and residential area because of safety and short commute to Cleveland Clinic, but higher rent.

It is difficault for me to choose the best schools for my children.
I know there are more information on website like stdents/teacher ratio, rank, ethnic percentage, and university entrance rate, but I want to get any advice for the real insight.

Thank you in advance.

EASL does mean English as a second language. However, I suspect they often are focused on kids who are Spanish-speaking. Immersion likely will work well for your daughters, perhaps with help from English tutors who speak Korean (see the Korean American Association below).

Most Greater Cleveland high schools are grades 9-12, with a middle school often grades 6-8.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beachwood_High_School

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Educat...ational_stages

Perhaps check Wikipedia articles for various cities to see which cities have a larger Asian-American population, if that is a concern.

Perhaps e-mail this organization to see what advice they would provide to you:

Korean American Association of Greater Cleveland

http://www.clekorean.org/

Perhaps they could put you into contact with other Cleveland transplants from Korea.

If you check demographics here, you'll see that Solon, which has one of the very best school districts in Greater Cleveland, reports a population of 10 percent Asian ancestry.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solon,_Ohio

The commute would be half an hour in good weather, likely longer during rush hours.

This Wikipedia article reports contradictory information for Beachwood, saying the Jewish population is 90 percent, but that African-Americans are 13.4 percent of the population and Asian Americans just over 7 percent.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beachwood,_Ohio

Whether you would need two cars or not would depend upon where you lived and its mass transit connections.

Here's something very unique to Cleveland that you may enjoy visiting. It's located very near the Cleveland Clinic, just north of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which by the way, has one of the best collections of Asian and specifically Korean art in North America, although likely not impressive to someone who has seen Korean art collections in Korea!

I think Beachwood would make most sense. Great schools and close commute.

Actually English as a second language is "ESL", just to clarify (still do some ESL work to this day, I'm a nitpicker). If you're searching that might impact the results. I'd say beach wood is the best bet though.

Default Kiwi in oh

Hi we just moved here, ohio, too and moved to an area called Bath township. It's a beautiful area if your looking for more country settings of 3+ acres. Already my neighbor has brought me warm brownies made with coconut oil. Mmmm. I have 3 kids. The schools are excellent and smallish. Which I liked. I feel very safe here too. Good luck with your search. My husband works around the clinic and it's only 25 - 30 mins for him.

I was thinking Beachwood too when I asked the question. Solon as 2nd option but longer commute.
