This probably sounds a little silly but I was wondering what type of trains RTA runs. Are they considered light rail or heavy rail? Just curious.

The Red-line is heavy rail and the Green, Blue and Waterfront lines are light-rail.

I thought the Green line was considered light rail as well?

I think that is what she was implying... semantics.

Does Cleveland have plan to expand the heavy rail system?

Waste of money. The red line already connects little italy, University circle, downtown, Ohio city, and the airport. Not sure what other areas you'd want it to go to that would justify a massive price tag.

There have been serious discussions about extending the Red Line to Euclid. It's more likely IMO, that the Healthline will be extended to Euclid with the establishment of a large park and ride there. Likely much cheaper with more stops/stations. Hopefully, RTA would offer free transfers to the Red Line at its current eastern terminus at Windermere in East Cleveland.

It appears the study has stalled.

Okay, I see. I was trying to figure it out by the appearance of the trains. Just curious. Thanks to all who responded.

The Blue and Green Lines don't always, such as in Shaker Hts., have rights-of-way separated from vehicle and pedestrian traffic; e.g., vehicles and pedestrians cross light rail tracks at intersections. This seems to be a key distinction between heavy and light rail. The Blue/Green rights-of-way often include former street car rights-of-way.

I've always thought that the Red Line was heavier gauge than the Blue and Green Lines and so Blue/Green cars couldn't run on the Red Line, and vice versa, but it turns out that they are the same gauge and share some of the same track.

Heavy rail also sometimes refers to heavy passenger capacity. This implies that the Red Line carries more passengers than either the Green and Blue Lines, and the Red Line does have twice as many annual passenger rides as the Blue/Green lines combined.

Interesting. I used to ride Chicago's El trains when they were very heavy wooden affairs with wicker seats. Their replacements were the steel lighter ones. To me, those were the differences between "heavy" and "light" although I know that's not the definition.
