A few years ago i had a bill that high, but my house was 2700sq/ft and was 100 years old, all origional windows and only insulated in the attic floor. Most winter months my bill was $350 or so. I also kept my thermostat on 64 and stocked up on blankets........besides that my aunt bought me an electric blanket that i used to cover up with on the couch.......it was warm and toasty!! I feel bad for the suckers who bought my house last year!

Holy New Jersey Batman! That sounds like my monthly heating bill for oil in NJ! Check days in cycle or possibly they used a very low guess for your usage last month vs a real meter read.

My advice for everyone would be to replace your current thermostat with a programable type thermostat. Mine allows for different settings on Mon-Fri and Sat-Sun. So, during the week, it's set to 70 from 6am-7am. Then it drops to 60 while I'm at work. Then, before I get home at 5:30, it jumps back up to 70 until 9pm. I may not go to bed at 9, but it doesn't drop back to 60 instantly. So, during the week, it's at 70 for the 5 hours that I'm home and awake, and at 60 for the 19 hours when I'm not home, or sleeping. |

Our current apartment is only around 900 sq. feet, has new windows but is not insulated. We keep it at 60 all the time except from 4:30pm - 9:00pm when we keep it at 68. Our monthly bill in the winter is around $300. I don't really enjoy paying $300 a month to freeze in my own home!
Anyway, we're considering buying sometime this year and I noticed that most homes around cleveland were built in the 50's and 60's. Are most of these homes decently insulated or am I just asking for an even bigger bill while still freezing? |

I have a 1700 sq ft house, and it was built in 1920. My last gas bill was about $220, so I guess i'm not doing too bad

i think what happened is that i have been getting "estimated" bills for awhile and now they finally read the meter.. will be interesting to see next month.

I live in a small house, 1100sqf, and my bill this month is $203. I have no insulation in walls, old windows, etc. - I have a programmable thermo. Overall, I don't have huge gas bills, but I know people that are really having problems keeping their big houses heated.
