Wings Hobby is great. That Quizno's was getting pretty crusty as of last summer when I left...

The housing costs are the best thing about Cleveland right now. Here in Austin, it's similar to your situation in Jersey. In the city(where it's most appealing and vibrant), I'm seeing little 2-bedroom bungalows for over 300K. Granted, they are in VERY appealing areas with a lot of things happening, walkable etc...but damn, in Cleveland that house would be 60K

I guess you get what you pay for?

Default Cleveland

I have some agreement and some disagreement with other posters. I agree one should have a job before coming here. With a good job, Cleveland is terrific. I purchased discounted Cleveland Orchestra tickets through my employer and had a ridiculously great sushi dinner all for under $100.00 for 2 people. The cost of living is low for a great city lifestyle. We are as it home in the museums as we are at an Indians game or steel workers bar or a high end martini bar, so it is working for us thus far. The Midwest culture is a neat experience as well if you have never lived anywhere in the Midwest before. As far as the gay scene, Lakewood is very accommodating, however Cleveland Heights should also be considered as it is especially "brainy" gay friendly. A lot of professionals and other intellectuals reside there (as well as everyone else in between). As I am sure you know, the library system is top notch. I would take buying a home very seriously and would not do so until after you have lived here and are sure you want to stay and have picked out a neighborhood you may not want to leave for many years (b/c you will either lose money or not be able to sell at all!) . Cleveland seems sort of blasé about gays I guess. While people are not exactly in the closet, they are not advertising it either. I know many gay people and most have strait and gay friends. Cleveland is very relationship oriented whether you are gay or strait. This is a big complaint many singles seem to have. I do not think a child of a gay parent would have any problem at all assuming you remained in a reasonably progressive area (which would include Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights and many parts of the city). I am not saying many other areas would be unwelcoming, but some communities are down right backwards (generally to the south and further west) . I agree most of the local politicians are total disasters. The citizenry shrug it off as to be expected, which is quite sad, b/c little changes. I really love it here (have been here 5 years), and think it is a wonderful place to be. I worry about the economic conditions, but we can be pretty mobile if needed which makes it less stressful. Hope this helps!

Exclamation yeah bad idea...

Hi I am a 26 yr old lesbian, cleveland born and educated.... funny thing i'm about to move to LA (for a ph.d program). Anyways, the scene around here is horrible. Straight people on here make Lakewood out to be is some sort of gay paradise. Trust me, its just plain lame. There are a couple of decent bars in downtown Cleveland that were cool when I was an undergrad (there are a lot of colleges in the cleveland metro area... but to be honest, every decent lezzy college grad peaces out of here as soon as they obtain the means to. If it wasn't for my closeness to my fam, I would have been out of here years ago.

I do have to say I agree with the post above though, I have been in Cleveland Heights for years and it is fairly progressive, and as put "brainy gay friendly" lots of liberal academic/indie/hipster young people. The thing is the majority of my brainy hipster friends are straight. The gay scene around here is virtually non-existent.

Non-gay highlights of cleveland include: The Cavs, Coventry Village, the Tremont arts scene, and Case Western Reserve/University Circle areas.

PS... Columbus, Ohio has a superior LGBT scene and is much more gay friendly than CLE.... it also sucks way less than Lakewood.

Hope this helps.

I agree with everyone, if you have no job offers, don't come to Cleveland. It's near impossible to find a job here, and your house will lose value. There's many better places to live that have what you're looking for.

Cleveland is not a bad place to live. If you like sports it's a great sports town with the Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers, Browns and they even have a Hockey team. They just passed a vote to have Casinos in Cleveland, so if you gamble that will be nice to have. They are going to start building a Medical Mart with a new Convention Center and probably a new Hotel. They have some very nice restaurants in Cleveland and one of the Iron Chefs lives here (Michael Simon) he has 2 restaurants in Cleveland, Lolas and I can't remember the other one. Yes, Cleveland has taken a hit just like most towns with the foreclousers and all but there is tons to do. It has a nice theatre district, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is here and if you like concerts, everyone comes here. There isn't anyone that I wanted to see here in concert that hasn't come here. The government isn't the best "lots of politics" but what town doesn't have that. They have a community Airport that needs to leave and be developed because it sits on the lake. They need to develop that great lake they have with all that land, once they do that they will see a lot of progress. If you want to find a deal on a house, now is the time to buy but I wouldn't buy one unless you have a steady job here. The Library is one of the best in the Country. So all and all there are pros and cons but I love it here.

Check out this link

It will give you a good idea of some of the things going on in Cleveland. The organization also has info for GLBT.

By the way= I see a lot of shout-outs for the Cleveland library system. I never realized how good is was until I moved! It's truly an asset.

Ohio in general has very, very good library systems. If I recall correctly something like 25% of the top library systems in the country are in Ohio - no other state has anywhere near that concentration of highly ranked libraries.

Pretty funny thread, evolving into "lesbians go to the library".

I have to laugh at some of you...and loudly: "Don't move to Cleveland unless you have a job there!"

Ummmmm...how about, "Don't move ANYWHERE unless you have a job there." In case you haven't noticed, things are tough all over and the loss of jobs is not just some local, Cleveland-area phenomnenon.

Furthermore, anyone who would take a $20K hit when gainfully employed is a fool. Don't listen to them.
