Waterfronts and rats? Rivers?

Please define what a rat problem is? I'm in Chicago for two days, seen at least 5 rats scurrying about on Michigan Ave (Mag Mile) in the evening.

I would guess living by Lake Erie is no different than other water or riverfronts in any city.

Strange question.

I don't notice any more or fewer rats in Cleveland than any other city.

Although I know every city has them, I've never once seen a rat in Cleveland. I see them almost every time I go to New York, however.

Rat problems stem from garbage (i.e., food supply), not bodies of water. Water merely serves as a way of "importation" and rats happen to also be good swimmers. In New York (Manhattan) they pile their garbage in bags on the sidewalk which essentially provides a buffet for the rodents.

Rats will be present near water bodies almost 100% of the time. Ready supply of food and hiding places.
