Two other quaint small towns that came to mind, both about 35 miles from downtown Cleveland, are Chardon (east) and Medina (southwest). Both have New England-style squares in the center of town surrounded by century buildings, and charming older homes on the streets nearby. However, the outlying parts of both towns, sadly, have seen a lot of "sprawl" sprouting up in recent years, and you would have to consider lengthening your travel time to Cleveland. Particularly in the winter, commuting to the city could be a real pain... and if you choose Chardon you had better like snow, because you're going to be seeing lots of it!
Chardon would, however, give you the advantage of being very close to Mentor.
I'm really not sure what housing prices are like in those two communities, though.
