Great article, especially the emphasis on the "tradable economy." When we supply goods and services to persons living outside of Greater Cleveland, a multiplier effect is created. Workers in the tradable economy spend money locally and support 3-5 other jobs in a ripple effect.

The multiplier effect

Since the departure of Ned Hill, the former dean of the Levin School of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State and expert on economic development, for Ohio State, there has been little discussion of the significantly negative impact of the "Republican Toll Road" on the northern Ohio economy. Escalating tolls on the leveraged Ohio Turnpike and the leased Indiana Toll Road to finance highway construction and maintenance throughout both of those states, while the I-70/I-65 corridor remains free, has greatly diminished the competitiveness of the northern Ohio manufacturing economy.

The toll for a six-axle truck traveling the Ohio Turnpike and Indiana Toll Roads from Akron to Chicago using EZ Pass now is close to $92, versus free from Columbus to Chicago. Prospective and existing manufacturers who rely on trucks for east/west deliveries or just-in-time inventory management definitely consider such inputs.

Northern Ohio politicians and media leaders have been extremely negligent in pushing back against this ever escalating situation (tolls can increase at the rate of inflation on the Ohio Turnpike for more than 20 years and on the Indiana Toll Road for more than 80 years). VP Mike Pence was a champion of the Indiana Toll Road as Indiana's Governor. Don't be surprised if the Trump infrastructure plan further increases tolls on the Republican Toll Road.

Now we have to deal with the Trump travel ban which is impairing the international business model of the Cleveland Clinic as well as the region's export economy.

Do you support the new Trump ban on travel from 7 Muslim countries, even though opposed by Ohio's U.S. Senators?

Can northern Ohio's tradable economy prosper in such an environment???
