I have lived in both the Detroit and Cleveland areas, and for me it is no contest. Detroit wins hands down in just about any category except cost-of-living.

Currently, I am in Toledo ("Little Detroit"). OP; have you considered Toledo? It is similar to Cleveland and Detroit, but obviously much smaller, which you seem partial to. It is also on Lake Erie and the downtown is really coming back strong.

Detroit is a second fiddle compared to Cleveland in high culture -- art museum, orchestra, theater. Detroit has a great art museum, but its physical plant is dated, and it has a very different collection than the Cleveland Museum of Art, with a much greater emphasis on European art. I did enjoy the DIA's Native American gallery. The CMA has one of the best Asian art collections in the U.S.

With an NHL team, Detroit has better pro sports.

With Lake Erie, and a smaller river with both shores in downtown Cleveland, I also prefer Cleveland's waterfront areas. Cleveland's East and West Flats are very good entertainment venues, with mixed used development, and getting better. Have you visited the East Flats in the last few years?
