Around Wed. of this week I will drive from CLE to Montgomery (family and friends) and then to Mt. Airy, NC. I have never done this drive.

I am looking to see cool little towns or places along the way. I also have to drive back around the 17th.

If you know of places along the way, please share.

I'm not into spending money on food btw, but am more into historical sites, small towns, etc.

Thanks!

What's your route to Montgomery and back from NC? The latter is loaded with options, especially for a history buff. Have you visited Washington, DC, frequently. What types of history most interest you?

If heading to Montgomery, AL, by I-71, definitely consider IMO Malabar Farm State Park southeast of Mansfield and the aviation history attractions of Dayton.

For Malabar Farm State Park, see Mohican Region here:

Given your interests, you likely would enjoy the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Perhaps check out Mammoth Cave National Park.

Dayton also has a Packard Museum.

For the drive between AL and NC, perhaps check out the Chattanooga area. Lookout Mountain, an iconic tourist destination in the Southeast, is spectacular with Rock City, the world's steepest incline passenger railway, Ruby Falls, and the site of the "Battle above the Clouds" in the Battle of Chattanooga.

Chickamauga was the second bloodiest battle of the Civil War and has a very good national military park.
