Not necessarily in a critical way. Sometimes it's just, "Gee, that's nice, I wish we had that."

Sometimes it's, "Oh they don't have that, we do."

But it's usually not a big deal. More observation than anything else.

Part of the fun of travel is seeking out new experiences and things in general you don't find at home otherwise you may as well stay at home.

You certainly do not have to be a socialite to enjoy art museums or any kind of museum for that matter. That goes for the symphony and plays. I've always enjoyed those, many people do. It all depends on individual preference.
Yeah that's true. But, you have some Clevelanders who wish Cleveland would copy other cities; there are some who'll say, "Why can't Cleveland be like NYC, Chicago, Miami, San Fran, Atlanta, Houston, etc.?"

I've personally never heard someone say that.

I'm just going by my experience. I've heard some people say that they wish Cleveland would have a lakefront like Chicago.

I never hear this... What I more hear these days, with more local positivity and optimism than I've ever seen in Cleveland, is more like: "Cleveland has everything the bigger cities, like Chicago, but in a smaller, more accessible package."

Those who are confident in what they have and who they are really don't care about the wishes of "some people" who will never be happy no matter what they have. These "some people" only wish to be like others because of the insecurities within themselves.

When the discussion turns to what Cleveland should do for future development projects, its only natural that one would look at the good things other cities have done. So when we discuss Cleveland's waterfront for example, Chicago does make a relatively good benchmark.

Another thing that Clevelanders take for granted: the climate. We really don't appreciate it enough. The amount of rain we get, the number of warm days (like yesterday, December 2, it was 60+). Every winter curmudgeon, like myself, should be forced to "vacation" in Phoenix for 4 weeks in July.

Yeah I agree with you on climate. But, what really makes us curmudgeons is that we don't get out and do anything while it's cold or snowing. I remember a lady that I went to CCC with, who was from the East Coast. She told me, "In Connecticut, people are still outside hanging out, people don't do that here in Cleveland." I think we need to be a little more active and tourists in our own city instead of just being homebodies 24/7.

As far as Phoenix, I heard it's no joke in the summertime. It's gotten up to 100+ degrees on some summer days. My uncle lived out there for awhile and my cousin currently lives there. They told me that the dust storms are no joke, and they're even worst than snowstorms.

I agree with wanting to incorporate the good things other cities have into Cleveland’s future development. What has no merit is whining about not having things at present. As in, “Why can’t Cleveland have this or that as other cities do?”

Oftentimes the fact is over looked that those cities may have taken decades to attain those “things.” They did not just sprung up overnight. People worked hard to get them. I used to live in Chicago before the Outer Drive was extended to the far North Side. I also lived in Portland, OR long before it became trendy. Before those things were in place there was nothing much enviable about those areas.

Remember too that not all things will work in all places. I think Cleveland is trying to work on doing the best Cleveland can right now.

I'm one of those who wishes that. Just today I was thinking about it while riding the Cleveland State Line bus on the West Shoreway and looking out the window at all the dreck we have on the lakefront before reaching Edgewater Park. I found myself missing the long, long stretch of beautiful parkland I used to enjoy along Chicago's North Lake Shore Drive. Sometimes I would walk the lakefront park from downtown all the way to my highrise apartment five miles north.

Typical Chicago homer. What else is new?
