student dormitory - question from Poland, Europe
Hello everybody,
I am a Polish student coming to Cleveland for an internship in the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine during August-Septeber.
I have some troubles finding a place to live - I already wrote to the Guest Housing of CWRU, but their program dates (for summer schools) are from May till August, which doesn't work for me. They wrote me back to consider the Clinic Guesthouse, but the prices there are way too high for me (90$ a day...)
I am sure you have some student dormitory in Cleveland as well, but I don't really know how to look up for them...
Could anybody help me?
Thank you in advance
Greetings from Poland,
Alina.

Hey, I'm from Poland myself. The sad fact is that here in America, we don't have cheap student living places. The few hostels that are in the US, are priced like hotels. I'm sorry to say that you don't have much options. I'd try looking for a host family that could take you(there are many Polish people living in the Cleveland area), you could try and find a cheap hotel outside the area, and bus in(depending on your budget) the only thing is that cheap hotels are hard to find now, and it would be a pain. An apartment would seem to be too expensive for you, especially if you're renting on a month basis, plus if there were to be one, it would be in a bad area, and lets just say you would not fit in.
Also try and contact the Polish America Cultural Center, I'm sure they can help you find something. They're always having Poles comes over, and help to find work/sleeping places. The web site is here POLISH CENTER , and their contact info is 6501 Lansing Ave, Cleveland, OH 44105
tel/fax: 216-883-2828. Let me know if you need any more advice/help

Case Western University is not to far away from a suburb called Lakewood. They have a lot of rentals, it's a decent neighborhood with a lot of diverse cultures and it is close to the busline. You could probably find a decent place to rent for around $500 a month. That's about $20 a day.

Dorm Style Housing
You should also look into the Heritage Suites Apartments, which are efficiency style units located above the downtown YMCA near the campus of Cleveland State University. The monthly rent is around $450 which includes all utilities (heat + water). You would be about a five minute walk from the soon to open Silver Line, which will transport you to Case in about 10-15 minutes.
Another option would be Ohio City, a bustling city neighborhood with great access to a massive farmer's market known as the West Side Market as well as the Redline train, which will transport you directly to Case in about 15 minutes. I routinely see adverts for apartments in Ohio City in the $350 - $450/month range. Keep in mind that these numbers generally do not include utilities.
Last, you might find house rentals in the Little Italy neighborhood (a stones throw from Case) Little Italy Redevelopment Corporation - Residential Programs, Services and Resources

If you don't already know about Craigslist, you might want to check that forum ( craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums look in the Cleveland site for housing).
I liked the advice about meeting the Polish community. You should find a place for the first week or two while you get your bearings and figure it all out. If it's not easy to find a place before you arrive, relax knowing that you'll figure something out once you arrive, and see the lay of the land. You'll be able to find roommates or something, but it's much easier to do after you arrive.
You'll likely be much happier out of a dormitory as well!
Good luck with it!

And that is one of the many problems of the US. Students get ripped off on everything here, even travel.
