Wednesday, January 5, was the first day in Cleveland's 2021-22 winter with a low below 20 degrees F. The National Weather Service/NOAA reported a high of 42 degrees F. and a low of 17 degrees F. for the day.

Today, January 7, is the first day of the winter in which, living in the snow belt, I used my snow shovel to push a couple inches of snow off my driveway; not worth putting gas in my snow blower. A thaw is expected for the next two days.

16” on my driveway in Cleveland Heights. Also pure manual labor. I have a “plow style” blade push shovel which proves utterly useless in a wet/deep snow like this. So it was old school shovel and chuck. Reminded me of my childhood in 1970s/80s NE OH.

Yep, like a day or two ago on those maps, it wasn't even hilighting Cuyahoga at all. Then they said 5-9 inches. It's double that.

Yesterday, January 17, 2022, was the first time a snow blower was needed in Greater Cleveland during this snow season (a snow blower wasn't really needed in my area in the snowbelt last winter season either). We had a reported 16 inches of moderately wet snow in Lake County. See details in post 10 in this thread.

https://www.city-data.com/forum/clev...l#post62722324

National Weather Service reported snowfall totals for Greater Cleveland were above a foot in most of Lake, Geauga and eastern Cuyahoga counties. More than 15 inches was reported for Cleveland Hts., Chagrin Falls, and most of Lake and Geauga counties, with more than 20 inches in Waite Hill, Concord and Madison in Lake County and areas of Geauga County. Lorain and Medina and western Cuyahoga counties generally received 7 inches to a foot of reported snowfall.

I'm so excited for kids, especially as yesterday was Martin Luther King Day and a school holiday. They had a chance to experience an old-fashioned Cleveland winter, when we often had weeks of significant snowfall accumulations to enjoy when kids played outside daily for hours in the winter despite our greatly inferior winter clothing and gloves (no Thinsulate) compared to today.

Cleveland's snow resorts originally were scheduled to be closed yesterday, but they opened for five hours, but offered no rentals, food, or beverages, based on a report that I heard.

Vail Resorts now owns Boston Mills, Brandywine and Alpine Valley, and between warmer winters and a labor shortage, it appears that our ski resorts may now be on their last legs with fewer buyers of season passes in coming years. Hopefully, the metroparks will gobble them up and keep them available for sledding and snow tubing, at a minimum.

<<Some local and regional season pass holders at Boston Mills and Brandywine ski resorts in Peninsula Village have been left frustrated and upset by reduced hours at both locations.

Season pass holders like Valerie Marasco of Wadsworth believe hours at the ski resorts have been cut by as much as 50%, with a significant reduction in weekday morning and afternoon hours. Marasco and other season pass holders believe Vail Resorts Management, which took control of both locations a couple of years ago, should offer a partial refund or credit for next year....

Pat Mangus has been a Boston Mills season pass holder for 49 years. Mangus said the cutting of weekday morning and afternoon hours has been especially hard on seniors who like to ski when there are reduced crowds.>>

The local ski resorts didn't even open until January this year. Brandywine and Alpine Valley opened on only January 14. Alpine Valley is open weekends only. I guess local high school, after-school ski clubs are kaput.

<<The crowd-pleasing Polar Blast Snow Tubing Park near Brandywine has no opening date at this time.>>

Western ski resorts often offer downhill biking in warmer months, but their slopes are much more challenging for bikers, scarily so IMO.

Higher humidity in Greater Cleveland limits the temperatures necessary to make artificial snow.

A thaw is expected on Wednesday, Jan. 19, with high temperatures in Greater Cleveland near 40 degrees F. Subsequently, we're forecast to experience the coldest weather of the year with highs below freezing for 9 days with lows in the teens. No significant snowfall is yet forecast for this stretch of cold weather.

Will we have another snow blower worthy storm this winter season?

It's because the storm track actually moved west. Very difficult to pinpoint these things days in advance.

Mansfield Snow Trails ski resort (privately owned) has been open since December 17th. They invested in System Cooling Tower a couple years ago and allows them to make snow at lower temperatures.
