Dismal numbers on Ohio job growth reflect need to invest in education: Brent Larkin | cleveland.com

"As 2013 drew to a close, Gov. John Kasich crowned his beloved JobsOhio program “the most important economic development tool in America.”

Kasich must know something that more than 11 million other Ohioans do not.

Because, by any measure imaginable, 2013 was a year in which the JobsOhio results didn’t remotely match the rhetoric."
It's easy to agree with positive, yet general, statements.

It's easy to agree with TRUE and factual statements.

stayed in his declining community even though he had the opportunity to leave True
served his ward loyally for many years True
he has a good education, works hard True
because unlike administrations in the past he is consistent, and doesn't demand ***-kissing or kickbacks True
has commissioned street re-paving in some of the worst off areas that probably had been completely forgotten in previous administrations True

I would also add: hasn't been caught doing crack or sleeping with hookers or closing a road to mess with a councilman, or caught passed out in his driveway or going to Vegas on someone else's dime.

All general and subjective statements.

It is an issue, though, that bike lanes tend to be viewed as "low hanging fruit" and will be slapped down anywhere there's room, just so something appears to have been accomplished. This is one of my favorite examples of where that approach can lead. This is a horrible road to bicycle on, and all the bike lane does is create an illusion of safety without actually creating a safe biking environment. Admittedly I'm not familiar what Cleveland's specific plans are, but I do get a little nervous whenever things like the sheer number of bike lane miles are trumpeted as being the magic key to becoming a bike-friendly city.

As you alluded in a later post, though, Cleveland does have a built-in advantage by virtue of being laid out more like a midwestern city, with nice, wide streets in most places. But any bike facilities should be carefully considered and not just thrown around wherever they happen to fit in the streetscape. Portland, for one, has figured out that bike-friendliness is about comfort for the everyday rider (not just the spandex-clad road warrior), and built or painted facilities are only part of the equation. It is frustrating to see other cities get so caught up in statistics and numbers that they forget to be concerned enough about whether they're actually creating a comfortable environment to ride in.

Things looking good in Q4 2013 for Downtown Market. Anyone hear anything regarding the lakefront developers? I know 5 developers submitted plans back in August following the RFQ but haven't seen or heard anything since.
