WKYC: Developer teams with Marinescape to build aquarium in Cleveland's Flats

Proposed completion: SUMMER 2010.

It won't be a Shedd Aquarium (Chicago), but it's definitely something.

Not to mention, it will also have plenty to surround it. From the article:

"The Nautica Aquarium is designed to complement other attractions in Cleveland and the Flats. Nautica includes Shooter's on the Water, Rockbottom Brewery & Restaurant, IMPROV Comedy Club, Windows on the River Banquet Room, the Nautica Queen Dinner Cruise Ship and the Nautica Charity Poker Festivals.

The Nautica Pavilion, a 5,000-seat outdoor amphitheater, is expected to host aquarium related events. "

Great addition to the Nautica Entertainment District.

It sounds much better than I thought. I made that reply before I read the entire thing.

Especially these parts:

"The Nautica Aquarium will be its first walk-through aquarium development in the United States and will feature SeaTubeTM, its horizontal, curved underwater tunnel offering panoramic views of marine life from under the sea."

"It is expected to attract 400,000 to 500,000 visitors annually to Cleveland, make an $9.6 million to $27.2 million local economic impact and create 40 full-time jobs with a payroll of $1.6 million, Jacobs said today."

55,000 sq ft.+ (that's huge)?, 1st walk-through in the US? 400k-500k visitors a year?

Wow, if this works out like it says I'm guessing it would be named one of the best aquariums in the US and one of the top attractions in Cleveland. On top of that its amazing that they're planning on completing this entire thing by this time next year. Sounds a little too good to be true for Cleveland, but I'll keep my hopes up that everything goes as planned.

Has Cleveland done anything with light rail yet? I'd rather have good public transportation than fish. Shiny buildings do not bring people. Sustainable living brings people. Cleveland should be at the forefront of new urbanism.

What do you mean?

Cleveland currently has 2 light rail lines (Green and Blue) and 1 heavy/rapid rail line (red).

There's also a new "bus rapid transit line" (silver line) that goes down Euclid from downtown to University Circle. In comparison, Cincinnati and Columbus (along with many other similarly sized cities/metros) have no light/heavy rail lines or bus rapid transit line. On top of that there is also a very extensive bus system in Cleveland. We are doing very well as far as public transportation.
